Shels to get to the final, lose and end up in the playoffs, losing to Galway in the process.
That would be priceless

they will only get into Europe if they win the cup.
The European spot for winning the cup is a higher "seed" than the second or third place in the league. So if Sligo win the cup but finish second or third then they will take the Cup spot and the additional place will revert to the league

This is on wikipedia anyways.
If a team qualifies for European competition through both winning a cup and league placing, the "spare" UEFA Europa League place will go to either the cup runners-up or the highest placed league team which has not already qualified for European competition, depending on the rules of the national association.
Always thought the FAI did it that the league place would get it before a cup runner up (if Shels don't win it)

True but that was never proved and they still had two more rounds to get through before the final and managed to do it.
Just shows the quality to compete that the top first divisions have. Not much of a gap anymore with a lot of premier quality players playing first division football.

There was a fair old gap while it was 11 v 11.
Easy win for Shels in the end, Kavanagh was awful, really really awful. MacMillan was Pats' best player. Great finish by Cassidy, the chip reminiscent of that 2nd goal against Bohs :cool2:

Pats couldn't do the business when it was 11 vs 10 in their favour Friday night so it shouldn't take away from Shels doing the business against 10 man pats.

No there wasn't. We were well in the game and I thought we were unlucky to concede. Besides Pats had the man advantage on Friday and made a mess of it. Tonight we made far more effective use of the man advantage.
I didn't see Shels scoring or equalising..

Definite peno, if Rogers doesn't throw himself in front of Dawson, Dawson gets to the ball without question because of the lack of pace the ball is moving at. If he gets to the ball, he scores. So on that basis Rogers has denied a clear goalscoring opportunity and its a red. I've seen referees not give the red when they've also given the penalty so there can be a lack of consistency, but the red should definitely be given too. I mean what happens if the penalty is missed? The offending team has completely gotten away with fouling to stop a clear goalscoring opportunity.

In fairness the shells lads (fans) deserve a day in the sun after all they ****e they had to deal with, could conceivably be in europe and in the 1st div next season thou :P
for our co eff sake I hope shells promote but loose the final and it (europa place) goes to a premier div club thou!
Saying that a cup win, european footie and promotion would probably mean they would be a pretty decent outfit next season

As far as I'm concerned, over the course of these 2 games I reckon we've shown we're as good as if not better than Pats at least. We certainly won't be sending Shamrock Rovers into panic next season if we go up but with a few quality additions we could definitely comfortably grace the top half of the table.

You should give the referee a ring and tell him that Dawson actually isn't great in clear goalscoring opportunities and to rescind the red card.

If they deserve a day in the sun for their troubles then we've built up enough troubles to mean we should dominate Irish football for at least the next 10 years.

My reaction at the time was it was a deserved penalty and red card and I don't see anything from those clips to change my mind. I know its easy to say now but I wasn't worried about us after conceding the goal. We kept our heads up and we were well in the game before the penalty incident. Like I said Pats had their chance on Friday. They didn't do enough in either game and thats why they're out.

Definite peno, if Rogers doesn't throw himself in front of Dawson
I think "throw[ing] himself in front of" the player is a bit over the top. There's more of an element of the Shels player running into the keeper, with both players being generally clumsy. Maybe a peno; you could argue the defender was going to clear anyway, so the red card was harsh.

I believe refs should be less inclined to send players off than they appear to be. Every foul seems to merit at least a yellow card with some refs.
I could be wrong but people do not pay into a match to watch a ref (I wish a few of our refs would realise that).
Red card should be for dangerous/serious offences only. Lets try and keep it 11 V 11. Would the match last night have been worse off if ref had not flashed red (similar question RE Friday night) ?

Thanks for the Youtube link Dodge. I know this makes absolutely no sense, but here goes anyway - if I was a Shels fan, I'd be screaming for a red card and a penalty. If I was a Pats fan, I'd be furious to have a penalty given against us, never mind having the 'keeper sent off.

Thought it was a soft penalty myself but the red was very harsh. Wasn't at the game but I'm sure that gave Shels an advantage for the remainder of the game.

You can see from the reactions here that (most) Shels fans think it was a pen. (Most) Pats fans disagree. Others are mixed too.
A shels fan on their forum even said it should've even been a free out as Dawson ran into Rogers :)
Absolutely no doubt it changed the game, but thats football for you.

To be fair Dodge, there was some debate on here about Shels red card on Friday night as well.Shels appeared (I didn't see last nights game) to deal better with red card on friday than Pats did last night although I think they were helped on Friday by Pats not finishing it off when they had a great oppurtunity (11 V 10 and a goal lead). Do believe red card last night was harsh - surely pen was "punishment" enough ?

In a situation like that for me it has to be both or neither. If the referee deems it a foul, then I think Rogers has to go because the defender ain't getting there to clear.

I honestly think both red cards were harsh (even though I was delighted when the keeper was sent off last night!). But there can be no doubt about the pen in my mind.
The big difference between the two teams was how they adjusted to playing with 11 men against 10 - Shels moved the ball around and stretched Pats, Pats on Friday seemed to go long ball very quickly. As for the earlier comment that Pats were outplaying Shels until the sending off that is utter nonsense, the game was very even (only one chance for each team) with Shels just shading it as their midfield was on top. I thought, after Friday, that Pats couldnt play as bad again...but I was wrong. Was talking to a couple of Pats lads before the game and they were decidedly pessimistic about the game, I now know why!

Pats players don't deserve a cup final after their behaviour earlier in the year.
The Shels players, equally don't deserve a cup final after their behaviour either.
Lets just give the cup to Sligo

I don't think it was a penalty. If its a penalty, its a red card (I think the ball should've be called back as the throw was taken 5 yards form where it went out too...).
And the difference between Friday's red card (which i though was wrong too), was that last night's also gave them a goal (though the penalty). So that incident changed the game from 1-0 Pats (11 v 11) to 1-1 (Shels with a man advantage and pats with sub keeper in (who's useless).
I'm not saying Shels couldn't have won anyway, but I don't think anyone could argue that the ref's decision didn't change the game.
I've yet to see a game where a ref hasn't made a mistake. Some bigger than others. While I might give my opinion on incidents, I don't get worried about it as sometimes we get on the right side of these decisions. Even though I'm obviously gutted to be knocked out again, whats done is done

are you telling me that you don't think theres a strong possiblity the game was thrown? that Philly Hughes penalty looks very dodgy to me and I'd question your keepers positioning for at least 2 of the goals. not to mention the lack of effort throughout your team
don't worry though, you can bet against Shels next Saturday, they won't need to throw that game to lose

If you watched Delany as much as I do you would know he has an awful habit of going walkabout in his box. Also Hughes has missed 3 pens (Sheriff, Crettyard and Waterford) this season, are they all as a result of betting scams?? There is no doubt in my mind that the game was not thrown, however they did play absolutely awful and deserved to lose. Again, this is Shels who like to do the unlikeliest things. But carry on with your internet theories. BTW Lee Harvey Oswald may not have shot JFK (just to give you the heads up on that one)...;)
