Armenia have to play Macedonia, who the drew 2-2 with at home.

The flip side of this is that if Russia beat Slovakia we only need to win/draw against Armenia to at least make the playoffs which i really would fancy us. We may be ****e at winning games but we're the hardest team in the group to watch i would venture.

Slovakia are made for Armenia to beat. The chess game was over run. Hammered them at home and now hammered them away. Slovakia will be a completely different proposition against Russia.

Doesn't really matter now though does it? We need a miricle to catch Russia and Armenia have to be the big threat to second!
There is a catch 22 coming up here. A Slovakian win against Russia will mean that if we dont win at home to Armenia then we risk losing all. The good side of a Slovakian win is that it gives us a chance to win the group.

I had mentioned that Armenia had some good results and had the best goals scored (even better now)
but I never expected this.
Wow game over!! 4-0.

We need Slovakia to do what they have already done and beat Russia again. This time at home. And I bet Armenia won't beat Macedonia. Both teams play the exact same way and I would predict a draw in that game. Slovakia beat Russia and we win our last two games then we go through as automatic group winners. Weiss and his team will get slaughtered by the Slovakian press and fans. But as in the World Cup on their day they can beat the so called big teams. They can still qualify.

Beat Andorra and another glorious 0-0 against Armenia should do it, no?

2 Rep of Ird 8 2 1 1 2 2 0 4 3 1 11 6 5 15

5 FYROM 8 1 1 2 1 0 3 2 1 5 6 9 -3 7
6 Andorra 8 0 0 4 0 0 4 0 0 8 1 17 -16 0
Ideal results for us in next round, we beat Andorra, Slovakia beat Russia, Armenia draw/lose to Macedonia
This would leave:
Ireland 18
Russia 17
Slovakia 17
Armenia 15

Crazy result but i'll take it.

No if Slovakia beat Russia.
Look lets face it, what would we prefer a playoff against some other team (likely strong) that has finished second or a home game against Armenia where a win would mean we qualify automatically.

We continue to play they way we played in our last two games and we will get beaten by Armenia. They will have no problem playing around Whelan and Andrews. No chance of a 0-0 in that game. Trapatonni has to cop himself on and quickly. We could end up blowing a great chance to either win the group or at worst a play off if we continue with the two we have in midfield.

i cant believe that Slovakia lost 4 - 0. I expected them to be 2nd or there abouts.
Two wins for us and a combination of other results to top the group. A win and a draw for 2nd spot, would that be right ?

No a win and a draw for us couple with two Slovakia wins would mean we lose out entirely.

He has to give McCarthy a chance against Andorra. Andrews and Whelan are offering less and less to the team IMO. He had McCarthy as sub today so he must see something in him to have him on the bench. Andorra would be the erfect game for McCarthy to get his first competitve start. If Gibson and Fahey are fit I would put both ahead of Whelan and Andrews. Not by a huge amount but they offer the team something more/different. they can both get on the ball and move the play along.

Simply put, just win the last two games and we're guaranteed a second place at least. If Russia loses against Slovakia, we win the group.

i think fahey dererves to be first choice on merit, and his inclusion could bring the whole team together, i also agree mccarthy should get a chance against andorra, and sure why not robbie brady as well

Certainly does, I don't think we could have hoped for anything more, I was prepared for a defeat to be honest.
October 7th and 11th will decide it once and for all.

Fahey can only play for us in a 3-man midfield - however exposed Whelan and Andrews leave us in there, Fahey is less physically strong and would be passed around even more. I think there's a serious case for making a few promotions from the U21s now - Brady, Clifford, McCarthy and Meyler certainly. If not now, before the next campaign begins.

And second on points. Long live Il Trap.
We wanted a win on friday and a draw today to revive both our qualification hopes but also to give irish football a boost with the general public.
We didn't quiet get that but we got next best thing. The next month and the build up to the end of the group will be fantastic. What odds a full aviva for the armenia game now!!

And what odds a woeful, defensive display lacking of any inspiration.. why? Because we'll only need a draw (if Russia have qualifed first)

I remember a few other crazy groups in fairness.
But on current form,
First dig....
we're most probably the fourth best team
...second dig....
(or third worst) in this group.
.....third dig in the one sentence.
In the current table, we're in second spot on merit, and I'd much rather have our last 2 games, than what the others have.
Great results, and great night for Ireland. 3 results our way and we're off to Kiev and Wroclaw.

fahey played cm in a 2 man midfield in a friendly last year and was very good. id stick a ball winner in with him, how can they be any worse than whelan and andrews.
whelan is no stronger than him anyway. the idea of having fahey in there is that we wouldn't be passed around because we have the ball.
wouldn't be against a 3 man mid, but would have to be shane long as the lone front man
