View Full Version : Padraig Amond

He's just come on against Porto with 10 minutes to play.
EDIT: Didn't really get up to much. Porto won a penalty shortly after he came on, which they scored, before adding another late on.
Had the penalty not occurred his side might have had a chance as they had been pushing for some time, but their main striker (Mario Rondón)'s finishing was absolutely atrocious. He got into great positions all game and just looked completely impotent when the ball came to him in front of goal.
If Rondon is his main competition there, Amond will be starting in no time.

2-1 win away to Braga means Pacos Ferreira are up to 5th in the league as of this weekend, although, in keeping with the lopsided nature of the Portuguese league, they're 27 points behind Porto (Pl 20, W 18, Dr 2, L 0!!) and 16 behind Benfica.
Don't really know how Amond is getting on there - rarely plays for the first team I think.

He's a regular in the matchday squad, and has been introduced in the last three games in a row, but before that he hadn't played a minute of football since early December. Stopped a shot on the line at the weekend, when Pacos were down to ten men, to get them the win. Only one start, in the Portuguese League Cup in November, when he also scored his only goal so far this season
One of the members of ybig.ie has been tracking his progress for me, you can see his data here: http://irish-abroad.appspot.com/PlayerDetails?playerID=55195

He should really wait until after the game to do that stuff.

sounds like a very level-headed fella. Good, well written article too. Hopefully he gets a decent run of games before the season ends.

Nice interview with Padraig here. Really enjoying his experience out in Portugal (apart from the hot weather!). They got to the League Cup Final last year though they lost. Has another 2 years left on his contract, still only 23. Has picked up the Portugese reasonably well, can understand it better than he can speak it. Looks as though the manager is a great support and has expressed his confidence in Padraig being a part of his plans. Will be interesting to see how his second season goes, it will be important now to try and bed himself in to the side following his settling in period.
Played Minor for Carlow hurlers too!!

Anybody else see this move as a backward step? Fair enough it would probably see him playing week in week out but skill levels alone; surely it would be worth sticking it out til Christmas in Portugal to see if he can break into the team? I know I read somewhere recently where his manager said they were happy with Almond's progress last year, so surely going from there to League One should wait until he's told that he's not wanted any more?
Owlsfan I'm not knocking Wednesday either, I just don't see the sense in it.

Agree. Its completely at odds with his interview of just 6 weeks ago as well.

Players and managers are hardly likely to come out and openly criticise the player/club
TBH I don't think he's good enough for that level. Don't think he's good enough for league one either but good luck to him
(Oh and I know someone who knows him well and he's a bit of a Mammy's boy. May simply just want to move closer/easier to travel to)

Of course not but it happens fairly regular (and I dont even use twitter :-). Amond stated that the manager said he was very much in his plans for the coming season. He didnt have to say that in an interview to RTE if it hadnt been relayed to him by the manager. If the manager did say that to him then what has changed in 6 weeks?
Ive no idea of his qualities or lack thereof - so good luck to him whichever way it goes.

Hopefully he stays in Portugal now. It's nice to have some of our players playing for European clubs. Better than League One anyway.

The EU passed legislation last week disowning it. It's now up there with Gibraltar, Olivenza, and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

I wonder do we know the same fella, as I've heard exactly the same thing. I do wonder sometimes.
Wish him all the best and all that.
But not surprised one bit that Wednesday rejected him. I was even surprised when he was called up to play for the u21s tbh.

Long is off to Rochdale on loan. He tweeted it earlier, but since deleted it because it hasn't been officially confirmed yet. But he's training with them at the moment.

started the last two games in a row, but has only started three games since the end of October (including those two). Was a regular starter up until then, with 11 starts in Morecambe's first 19 games
Only six goals this season (two penalties) and only one at home

Padraig Amonds 20 in 20 starts for Grimsby has the 27yo being talked about as the search for the next Jamie Vardy begins in earnest. Out of contract in the summer, and with scouts reported from Championship, L1 & L2 keeping an eye, the man will have options by the sound of this.

Wow. That completely slipped under my radar. Quite the return.
Not sure if Championship or L1 sides will be interested though. The man had a less than 1 in 4 record in L2.

21 Goals of Amond, he has another 11 since then, why has no big club not gone after him?
They would be nuts not too. ;)
Seriously he is the next Jamie Vardy, were I a Premiership manager I would
snap him up, got to be worth the gamble I mean they will be paying peanuts for
him, if he had a season like Vardy how much would he be worth?

He's out of contract now so I'd imagine he'll be looking to get a League One club now or a club looking for promotion from League Two.

Most of the non-league grounds in the club makes you realise just how far LOI lags behind in ground development.

Don't think so unfortunately. Four years in the fourth tier averaging just 9 goals a season isn't something a Premiership manager should be getting excited about. But he's certainly earned another shot at league football.

Have to agree with the other two posters, that's a bit much. Amond is nine months younger than Vardy, and playing non-league football. Don't get me wrong, it's a great achievement, but I doubt we'll se him play at a higher level than Championship (at best) in his career
