He was way off the pace at home to Russia which is what has planted grave doubts in people's minds.
imo green is far quicker and agile around the pitch than whelan. whelan seems to struggle to keep up with opposition players from what I have seen.
all our players were off the pace (until long came on) that night against russia. i sat thinking that the lack of our players playing for their clubs regularly at the time was a big problem as the russians were far far sharper in everything they did

True - at the time we had a lot of benchwarmers.

I'd like to Gibson and Andrews tried together in our 4-4-2, and in general I think any 3 from Whelan, Andrews, Gibson, McCarthy, Fahey and Green would make a good 3 in 4-3-1-2 / 4-3-3 / 4-5-1.
In a 4-2-3-1 I'd have Whelan and Gibson as the 2 and Andrews between the wide players.
Interesting, but do you play Robbie up top on his own?

Probably - the key is midfield actually getting to grips with a game.

He's never done well in that role, unlike Doyle, Long and Walters. Probably he's better as the more aggressive alternative to Andrews in your formation (though then you're back to something like the Czech game).

Now that Green has inspired comparisons to Billy Bremner, his ante has been raised.

I think we need Andrews having license to get forward though. However, in a 4231 or 451 I'd expect the wide players to be supporting the attack a lot, so Keane wouldn't be isolated - in theory anyway.
Let's not forget, even against 10 man Estonia we spent too much time without the ball until JW scored. It may be effective but my nerves don't like it.

Green set up Derby's equaliser at Birmingham today after Hendrick had battled well to win the ball. Green was also very lucky not to give away a penalty for a late challenge on Zigic and cleared a shot off the line.

Looks like Green is leaving Derby. (http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2012/0424/318236-csdf/)
Maybe he's hoping to make the squad and prove an attractive free transfer.
DeLorean

He's going to be an attractive free transfer regardless. Celtic, Leicester and Ipswich were all sniffing around during the January transfer window. My friend over said that apparently he was offered lower wages than he is on now, and said the worst thing is that it looks like he might be going to Leeds (who they hate). DCFC aren't the most ambitious of clubs these days under their much critisised American owners, so at 29 he probably just feels the time is right.

Maybe he'll go to Barcelona like Gary Breen.

Leeds playing Chelsea in the cup, Green playing.
I was gonna have a bet on Leeds at about 4-1 as I though they would
do well in a cup match. Wish I had as they have gone 1-0 up.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I though 4-1 was not great value + there is a long way to go.
Paul not involved in the goal.

How do you think that 4/1 looks now?
Well it looks rubbish, when I saw the fixture I though Leeds might be a good bet, I was expecting them
to be about 9-1 or something like that. I would have had a bet at that price. Fortunately they were 4-1
so my money remained resting in my account :)
But Leeds are the kind of team who could have a good cup run (which they did) so I guess that's why the
price was so low.
I see it finish 5-1 which is what you might expect for a League One side.
I guess Leeds made the fatal error of going a goal up early on.
I think the trick it to try and keep it tight and nick a late goal leaving Chelsea little time to respond.

Leeds are a mid-table Championship team. The fatal error was the keeper dropping one into the net right at the start of the second half to be honest, terrible mistake and a real confidence killer.

I think TC was referring to - losing 5-1 is not what you'd expect from a good championship side.

There are good Premier League sides who've lost by similar scorelines this year.

I actually thought at the time they were in League 1, I look at the championship table and must have missed then
or screwed up some other way. 5-1 is a bit poor for the Championship but then Chelsea are a good team.
Rafael has previous on having games of two halves, when he came back from 3-0 down in the Champions league final.

I watched some of the game and Green wasn't up to much, whatever he did was okay but was largely an anonymous figure. He was playing at right midfield, late in the 2nd half he was more central. When Chelsea moved the ball forward they could easily bypass Leeds' midfield.
The Leeds' team is bit like Reservoir of Dogs with the players Green, Gray, White and Brown.

dunno, there is another Irish lad playing Aidy White both got low/average ratings in the Guardian 6.9 for white 7.0 for Green,
ratings ranged from 6.9 to 7.9
I think Warnock plays Green on the wing, indeed Sky Sports shows that.
Great result for Leeds though
Update rating have changed (swapped) now Green has 6.9 and White 7.
Aidy White is supposed to have a pit of pace according to the forum, well according to some anyway, others laughed at the idea!!

Interesting comment here on White
to say that spurs had their reserves out is a bit of a joke bale Lennon Parker akotto Dempsey and a few more and as for bale bless him switching sides because Aidy white had to much pace for him mot well done leeds and I wish spurs all the luck in the prem as they are one of the only honest clubs up there
He must have some pace if he is faster than Bale!!! Does he have a thread here?

Just wanted to say well played Paul Green last night.
Gets a lot of undeserved criticism in various forums.
I'd rather have a Paul Green that will turn up when requested than these guys who retired in their mid twenties or these guys with imaginary injuries whenever it suits them.

Well said. Very good 45 minutes and helped turn the tide a bit. He is not as bad as a lot of people make out which I think is a throw back to the time when he was getting a game instead of McCarthy. He won't pull up any trees but is a useful Championship standard midfielder who will come when asked and not take the huff when dropped from the squad (as he was) or abuse the manager on Twitter.

I have never been a fan of Green but he played well last night.
Credit where credit is due.
just to throw a dash of reality out there, he has played very well in friendlies before. It is in the cut and thrust of competitive games that he has been found severely lacking.
Point taken about commitment to the jersey though. Very admirable.

To be fair to Green he plays a role he's unfamiliar with for us. He's more of attacking box to box midfielder for his club, at least he was with Derby anyway. I don't think his competitive performances were really that bad outside of the night against Russia where everybody was pretty poor. If I remember right he mixed up the losing of possession and winning it back in the away games against Armenia and Slovakia. I think there was every chance he would have improved with more games, which sadly hasn't been the case with Glenn Whelan over the last five years. I'm not saying he's the best option we have, I just think the dismay at the very sound of his name in unjustified.

Wednesday night's game was a competitive enough game, right until we scored the second.
Would he make it into the next squad? maybe if one of them (Andrews, Whelan McCarthy Meyler) gets injured and Gibson is still hurting.
I'd have to say, he made a case to be in ahead of Whelan.
