An interesting fact I learned about Glenveagh recently; the loch runs from south-west to north-east along the Owencarrow rift, formed in the Paleozoic age (520 million years ago), which eventually links to the coast at Fanad and onward under the sea to the great Scottish Rift Valley that divides Scotland in two through to Loch Ness. If you look at a map, you'll see what I mean.

Great thread, by the way. Only seeing it now. Some lovely photography. I might add a few more, if y'all don't mind...

I had heard before that the small earth tremors sometimes reported in Inishowen and less often around Fanad are down to a fault line that runs up through Scotland. I wonder is it the same thing you are mentioning?

I'd imagine it's the same thing, aye. They have a seismogram in Glenveagh National Park which records local seismic activity. The largest "earthquake" recorded in the local area was in Ramelton on the 21st of February in 2008, I believe; a whopping 2.4 on the Richter Scale. Well, relatively-speaking...

This is the Owencarrow rift outlined in red and, below that, the continuation of the rift valley up through Scotland, where it becomes more pronounced as it virtually divides the country into two landmasses separated by a deep 100-mile-long valley of lochs:

That Eiffel Tower one was on the BBC (http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/in-pictures-14745576) the other day.

Sacrebleu!: A lightning strike gives a vivid backdrop to the iconic Eiffel Tower, while the Paris landmark is illuminated in vibrant blue lights. Amateur photographer Bertrand Kulik captured the shot which will appear in an exhibition titled "Lumieres celestes, lumieres des hommes", in Issy L'eveque, Burgundy. It was taken 21:02 GMT, 28 July 2008 during a storm in the French capital.

This is the Tissington Trail from Ashbourne, Derbyshire to Parsley Hay 13 miles further into the hills. It follows an old railway line.

I've run it a few times but only run the whole thing once over two days. 26 miles. There's avery slight gradient but hardly noticeable.

i thought this would be as good a place as any to post these... what happens when you go out to start your car in -44 weather to have it nice and toasty for your drive to work and then close the car door on your way back in for breakfast? This is what happens... its so flippin cold your sunroof shatters from the door closing!
