Typical Irishman on tour. Living in a central European paradise and you still can't help but check out the local cattle.

ha ha yeah, guess so, and have a load of farming photos to show when I go home: "This is how they do the farming in Switzerland!"

Say what you want about Ireland and how utterly ugly and soulless every town and city is compared to other European countries, but, if you know the right places to go, Ireland has scenery that could rival any country. You just have to leave urbanity behind.

I was watching an interesting BBC series called 'Imagining Ulster' (www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05514lq) the other night about the history of the Ulster(-Scots) identity and William Crawley, presenting and narrating, mentioned that Britain had secretly offered to agree to a united Ireland in principle during the Second World War if Ireland joined up with the Allies. De Valera rejected the offer, however, as there was no guarantee included and the reality of unity would still have to have been agreed by the "representatives of the government of Éire and the government of Northern Ireland". I was doing a bit more reading around this and came across a photo slightly similar to my own above in post #543 (indeed, there are plenty around the net) of Banba's Crown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irish_neutrality_during_World_War_II

I'd often wondered what the large 'EIRE' marking at Malin Head (https://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=malin+head&hl=en-GB&ll=55.382338,-7.371872&spn=0.00082,0.001714&gbv=2&hnear=Malin+Head,+County+Donegal,+Ireland&t=h&z=19) was all about (I wasn't able to get close to it, but it looks to be made out of stones?) and having seen someone latterly add 'UP DONEGAL' in smaller lettering beneath it, I'd assumed it was just some sort of pride "graffiti", but it turns out it was actually a marking to alert passing military aircraft to neutral Ireland during the war.

Danny your photos look great. What camera are you using?

The most recent ones in the thread were just taken with the camera on my Samsung Galaxy. Older ones in the thread would have been taken with a Fujifilm Finepix S1900.

I came across this photo (https://www.facebook.com/WhyDonegal/photos/a.359845674216221.1073741828.358197231047732/437954533072001/?type=3&pnref=story) yesterday. It's a pretty spectacular view of the north-west of Ireland taken from 34,000 feet (just over 10 kilometres) overhead by County Down pilot Graham Mounsey en route to the US last September.

https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xpa1/v/t1.0-9/12033070_437954533072001_5463393485931115741_n.jpg ?oh=a27e66fc236b0d5518f78fdb9638c435&oe=56F09484

Included is the entirety of Inishowen (Malin Head is on the extreme right of the photo) and the rest County Donegal, including Inch Island, Mount Errigal, Glenveagh, Arranmore Island, Gweebarra Bay and Sliabh Liag way off in the distance towards the horizon. Derry City can also be seen along with Magilligan Point (the bit of land jutting back into view at the bottom left of the photo). It's actually possible to see as far as Lough Erne (Fermanagh), Sligo and, I think, the Mayo Gaeltacht towards the upper left of the photo.

Incredible.

I was so impressed that I added some labels myself (https://twitter.com/DanielCollins85/status/672058353707843586) to point out various locations and landmarks around the north-west.

'Bonfire Night 15th August 2016 in Derry' by Bernard Ward (http://www.derryphotos.com/) has been chosen as Ireland's best single photo by the judges of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards: http://irishtechnews.ie/irelands-best-single-photograph-revealed-by-the-2017-sony-world-photography-awards/

http://res.cloudinary.com/jpress/image/fetch/w_700,f_auto,ar_3:2,c_fill/http://www.derryjournal.com/webimage/1.7887850.1490699226!/image/image.jpg

The judges of the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards have announced the photograph “Bonfire Night 15th August 2016 in Derry” by Bernard Ward, as the winner of Ireland’s National Award.

The Sony World Photography Awards which is celebrating its 10th anniversary is the world’s largest photography competition, and the National Awards is a global program open to photographers of all abilities. It aims to find the best single photograph taken a local photographer in 65 countries. 227,596 images were entered into the 2017 Sony World Photography Awards across all competitions

Bernard Ward’s winning image “Bonfire Night 15th August 2016 in Derry” is a notable entry and winner this year due to its somewhat controversial view. Bonfires have been part of Catholic and Protestant cultures for generations, and they’ve come under much criticism since troubles have subsided. This such instance was captured in the Catholic/ republican Bogside area of Derry on the day of the bonfire. In the picture, you can see lots of locals gathered to the left watching the youths of the Bogside build the bonfire made mostly of wooden pallets. In the foreground you see cars approaching. This bonfire stirred huge controversy as it blocked a public road.

Bernard Ward is 34 years old, a father of one from Derry in the Northwest of Ireland. He comes from a historic city which has seen amazing changes over the past 30 years, from horrific violence as part of “the troubles” in Ireland and Northern Ireland to the relatively normal and co-operative society today. He loves to document the streets of Derry and tell the story of his hometown, its history and culture through pictures. He works as a marketing manager but his dream is to become a full-time photographer.

Commenting on his success, Bernard says: “To win such an award like this especially in the Ireland category is such an honour for me. I enter the Sony World Photography awards every year and I have always dreamed of winning such a prestigious award. Winning this award means everything to me and makes all the years of hard work in photography worthwhile. Photography is a passion and to win an award like this is overwhelming for me. I have always admired the level of talent every year across all categories and to be considered a winner is one of my biggest achievements to date.”

Incidentally, here are some photos (originally posted in 'Current affairs' (http://foot.ie/threads/178393-Discussion-on-a-United-or-re-partitioned-Ireland?p=1913021&viewfull=1#post1913021)) that I took last Thursday afternoon during the procession of Martin McGuinness' coffin through the Bogside before the funeral ceremony at the nearby Long Tower Church:

The famous Bogside Inn is to the left and the Bogside Artists' Annette McGavigan (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annette_McGavigan) mural - 'The Death of Innocence' - is on the right. The Bloody Sunday commemorative mural (http://cain.ulst.ac.uk/bogsideartists/mural4/) is also visible at an angle.

The procession passes the back of Free Derry Corner (on the left), which has a tricolour flying from it at half-mast. A giant screen, on which the funeral procession and ceremony were broadcast live to the crowd, was erected on the front-side of Free Derry Corner.

It is probably the apparent banality of the scene itself (contrasted with the underlying story) that was deemed so attractive. Although I would tend to agree there would have to be more striking Irish photos available...

edit: I actually just clicked the article and it said the following:

Few photos up Errigal Mountain last weekend. Obviously, they've lost a bit of quality along the way from transferring from phone to Facebook to here, but I wasn't arsed going through uploading them straight from the phone. I may edit them again when I get time through Google Drive.

First one looks out over the Poisoned Glen, taken from around halfway up Errigal.

I use an old Photobucket (photobucket.com) account that I've had for years. Signing up is pretty straightforward and it's free. You can just sign up with a Facebook account.

An old building in Vrlika, Croatia where my wifes extended family lives and we spend some time. You can see a couple of scars from fighting but it was the shutters that caught my eye.

These markets were all lined along the side of the road by Opuzen Trg and Ploce on the drive from Dubrovnik to Split - the colours are insane.

Olive Grove on the island of Lokrum. The scent was unbelievable.

He could have at least left the bus number in to help locate the area. However It's likely a "3". "5" or "9". And guessing it's a "3" as it is a bus from the Ringsend Garage.

So, I figured out where that photo was taken from. I spent ages re-tracing the old no. 3 route from the late 80s in work one day a few weeks back and I completely forgot to post it up here.

So it's taken at a bus stop on Pearse St from the Pearse Sq side. There is a bus stop still there as it happens. And just through the window you can see a gabled roof peak and that building is still there on the West side of the resource centre.

The building on the left hand side is the St Andrew's Resource Centre.
