Bulgaria will not win all 4 remaining games and we will do enough that logically they are out. Most certainly.

Bulgaria have Montenegro at home in their next match. Likely a Bulgaria win.
Italy away in the next match after that. Likely a draw or a loss.
Away to Cyprus. Win or draw.
Home to Georgia. Win.
They'll very likely win at least two out of those four matches. They could win three and draw the Italians away, putting them on eighteen points total.
That means we'd need six points from our last three matches to get nineteen points and the play-off spot, if it is even available to us. I have a funny feeling that we'll finish second and not get into the play-offs.
We have Cyprus away, then Italy and Montenegro at home. Would you be willing to bet we get at least two out of three wins there? Very very tricky. We're not out of the woods just yet.

I personally dont think win or draw to Cyprus and win vs Georgia are even 50% likely for Bulgaria. To declare them beating Georgia even at home is crazy. They have a lot of factors going on there. Georgia might be more up for the game then they are.
NOW of course you can include us in it not being great, but you say if we finish second, will it even matter. Well, imagine being them? They are done. We may well be also but have it better than they do.
YES I admit, mathematically they are alive but surely Bulgaria will not be at South Africa man. And its in that regard that I declare them Done.

Italy also have to go to 'fortress Georgia' ;)
Actually Georgia have got some decent results at home including beating the
'mighty' Republic of Ireland in 2003 :D
So plenty of bananna skins for all.

Did I miss some bit of sarcasm, or didn't we beat Georgia 2-1 in Tblisi in March 2003, with goals from Duff and Doherty?

lol yes, my mistake ;)
I was scanning through the Fifa results and it seems I misread it, I did think it a bit odd I could not remember the public outcry though but I it down to the beer fogging my memory :D
They have beat Scotland though ;)
Actually after we, as you said beat them 2:1 they drew with Switzerland and then beat Russia 1:0, teams which I do remember we struggled against.
So they are capable of causing the odd upset, I expect a lot of the remaining gaimes to be pretty tight but it is still difficult so see Italy not topping the group.

Except we have Italy at home.
They play Italy before we do. Italy at that stage will know they will have to win that game to nail first spot, should we win in Cyprus.

It would be perfect for us if Georgia could pass out Montenegro. If that happened I think we'd be assured of the playoffs.
I just thought of this scenario - apologies if already mentioned.
Last game of the qualifiers, Italy are guaranteed 1st place and we are guaranteed second.
If we lose to Montenagro, they finish bottom and we are guaranteed a play off.
If we win Georgia are bottom and we lose out on a play-off!
Would be a crazy situation

Maybe I'm missing something but how could losing to Montenegro in the last game result in them finishing bottom while winning would result in Georgia finishing bottom? This defies all known laws of mathematics and if that situation could occur I would agree that yes it is crazy.

Croatia (5pts) reamaining games:
H Belarus 3pts
A Belarus 1pt
A England 0pts
A Kazakhstan 3pts
5+7=12
Scotland (7pts) remaining games:
A Norway 1pt
H Macedonia 3pts
H Netherlands 0pts
7+4=11
Northern Ireland (7pts) remaining games:
A Czech Republic 0pts
A Poland 1pt
H Slovakia 3pts
7+4=11
So 13 points should do us.
That's wins against Cyprus and Montenegro.
Or, if we only get 4 or 5 points from our last three games then we should hope that Georgia overtake Montenegro which will give us an extra two points in the table and give us 13/14.
All in all, I'm hopeful.

Poland could catch and pass the North. They're 3 points behind with a game in hand. Their last 4 are NI (h), Slovenia (a), Czech (a), Slovakia (h)
Chance the Czechs could catch NI too, but they're 5 points back with game in hand

In practice they're two points behind- the game in hand is against SMR. They'll win it at least 5-0.

It'll just cement their position as number two is all. Won't affect the number two table, but it means that looking at Croatia's rubbish total is probably irrelevant (hence my question earlier).

Here is some analysis and predictions up to and including tonight's results
My runners up table
Russia 8 6 1 1 9 3 19
France 8 5 2 1 7 6 17
Greece 8 5 1 2 12 4 16
Ukraine 8 4 3 1 10 4 15
Bosnia-Herzegovina 8 4 1 3 18 7 13
Republic of Ireland 8 3 4 1 7 4 13
Czech Republic 8 3 3 2 6 4 12
Norway 8 3 3 2 2 3 12
Sweden 8 2 5 1 2 1 11
My analysis and assumptions
13 points is the magic number. Bosnia may be OK if they only get 12 as they have a huge goal difference.
Forget Russia, France, Croatia/Ukraine and Greece. These groups are guaranteed a best runner up. Bosnia have a huge goal difference which will help them. They also have Spain home last match which is a dead game for Spain. 2 away wins in Estonia and Armenia will most likely do it unless Turkey can win in Sarajevo and Brussels.
I’m predicting 2 draws for Sweden/Portugal – Denmark A and Hungary A. Good chance the runner up here will be on 12 points or less. Both have already lost at home to Denmark but the Danes are virtually through now. Hungary have a chance here but I can’t see them beating Sweden and Portugal. If Sweden or Portugal win in Budapest (or Copenhagen) then the runner up goes to 13 which will probably be enough.
Czech Republic also requires a few calls such as a home win v Poland. Slovakia probably have enough to win the group now. The draw at home v Czech is needed but I’m allowing defeats at Northern Ireland and Poland. Northern Ireland could sneak in with a result in Prague or Poland but I fancy the big guns to get their act together in the Autumn.
Norway/Scotland is the also a likely worst runner up at this stage. I’m predicting Norway beating Scotland at home. I’m also giving them a win in Iceland. Scotland would need to win in Oslo or v Holland home to make 13 or draw both to make 12. The fact that this group finishs in September will help give other sides a target. A draw
A Georgia win in Montenegro would also boost Republic of Ireland as it would give us an extra 2 points. I think this is unlikely but in a dead match it could happen. We may need a goal difference swing too.
It is still way too early to tell in reality.

Games of interest tonight
Group 6 Belarus v Croatia
Group 9 Norway v Scotland
If Norway win tonight group 9 will finish as worst runners up imo

Scotland could still definitely win their last 2 home games so 13 points might be enough for them.
We're in very similar situations with Scotland probably having easier fixtures than us.
As for Croatia, I think Ukraine will get 2nd anyway.

They could beat Holland but I doubt it.
Still a Norway win or draw is the best case for us tonight.
Scotland have done little in this group to impress.

Scotland won't beat Holland. They are in the same state if not worse than we were under Stan. As for tonight, I would be surprised if they won. Expecting a draw, but if Norway win, I believe we'll be in the play-offs.(at least)

3-0 and should be 4-0. Carew had the ball over the line and it wasn't given.

Scotland have Netherlands (0 points) and Macedonia (3 points) to go.
Should finish on 10.
Macedonia have Scotland and Norway away and so won't finish any higher than Scotland.
Norway have Macedonia (3 points) and Iceland (3 points) to go. Should finish on 12.
So 13 points should do us (same thing I said a couple of months back!), still a big ask.

I still think Scotland could win their 2 games so I won't be counting them out. Holland have nothing to play for. Scotland are from the 2 western islands that tend to play above themselves in these games.

Holland have set the target to get maximum points in this qual campaign.
They will not be taking the foot of the pedal.
Scotland will even struggle to beat Macedonia.
Burley is a dead man walking.
Norway to drop 2 points in Iceland.
Ireland will only need 4 points to keep ahead of group 9 2nd place.

Agree completely. Don't see how on earth anyone would think the result of this game is a forgone conclusion.

Scotland are at home though aren't they? I reckon they will overcome macedonia, but struggle against holland, however I see macedonia giving Norway problems.

Not sure I understand that surely everyone does that....doesn't mean you dont take your foot off the gas when you know you are already qualified

But, lets face it, Ireland probably need 5 more points to get second place anyway. What last night's result did for us was substantially lower the risk that if we finish second we'll be the worst runner up. I think that is quite unlikely now.
Plus, group 9 finishes earlier than the rest, in september, so we'll know beforehand how many points we need to get to be sure.
