I'm intrigued (and no little excited) as to how you made the link between whether or not this woman is called Anus and the kind offer to me of three ladies... ??

Very nice Mix Jebus. Months later I still can't decide whether I really like Feist or feckin hate her. Charming little song ...and yet ..and yet ... there's this odd Carly Simon thing going on ....but the fact that it's odd is keeping her onside for now.

Joanna Newsome is great. Sounds like Alfalfa from the little rascals and has these marvelous tunes ..Inflamatory Writ is a smashing song of hers as well.

My record collection isn't overfloweth with female artists I must admit. It appears women are more for knobbing rather than nodding along to.

Though a quick scan of my collection reveals an mount of work by Kirsty McColl, Sleeper and Catatonia.

Sleeper just missed the cut, well they missed out cause I couldn't find my It Girl CD

Top, top band however

I always thought there was something about Louise Wener.
I believe she has become an novelist since the band broke up.

She has, I even read her first novel such was my crush on her in the 90s. It's not bad, kinda Nick Hornbyish, so if you like that it might be worth picking up

Good work Jebus, good idea, and a very nice record!

Great start with Patti Smith, and I particularly liked the Le Tigre track, also All Seeing I (love the Buddy Rich (sort of) original) Tegan & Sara, Be Good Tanyas, Laura Marling and Ani DiFranco.
Sinead O'Connor one is by far the best she's done other than that collaboration with Jah Wobble.
Good finish too, Mr Bojangles is just a lovely song. And a nifty sidestep at the end, was expecting a completely different track!

Sorry though but Joanna Newsome remains a step too far for me. Interesting though. And good to know what a Lisa Simpson single will sound like should one ever come out. :D

Only know 5 of the tracks as well, which is always a good thing, so will report back on Saturday with my thoughts

Some great tracks on this CD, especially Frank Turner. That track is damn close to genius imho. I'll definitely be checking out more of his stuff.

Also Negativland, no idea what they think they're doing but it's funny anyway, Band Of Horses were very good, Sandie Shaw's track was surprisingly good and was that Johnny Lydon singing with Leftfield or someone who sounds remarkably like him?

BTW, There are 17 tracks on the CD not 16. The one not listed sounds like The Golden Horde, maybe you could let us know who it is.

Another ruddy bloody good mix. Especially loved 'Personality', while 'Burns My Skin', 'Open Up' (even if it's not the sort of song I'd regularly listen to), 'Thatcher...' and 'Acid Song' capped off an immense first half of the album. I liked the advice within the concluding line of the Acid Song. :D

The final two songs (Glasgow Mega Snake and the mystery song) were pretty great too. Didn't get Negativland though.

Hadn't heard any of the tracks before (indeed Mogwai and Band of Horses were the only two bands I had heard of) but I must check out The Aloof. Mogwai too.

Sunny Jim you are right, it is The Golden Horde a track called I Never Came Down.
That's what i get for compiling the cd in the early hours!

I agree with you about Frank Turner the man is a genius. The Sandie Shaw song is a cover of Lloyd Cole.

Did anybody like The Boxer Rebellion song? I only heard of them a couple of months ago. It's one of my favourite songs at the moment.

Tracklisting has been amended in earlier post.

It is! Just realised that I have 'Open Up (Vocal Edit)' on my itunes - it's a 4 minute shortened version of the one on the Optimist's mix.

Just listening to it again Optimist. Really enjoyed it. That Band of Horses tune is class.

I remember Sandie Shaw released that version of Are You Ready To Be Heartbroken in about April May 1986. Seemed to be trying to up her cred with the indie kids at the time having previously had some chart luck with a cover of The Smiths What Difference Does It Make. It's a really nice version of a classic Commotions tune but if I recall correctly (I was only 13 at the time) it failed to chart for her.

Call Me Blue is an all time classic and if I recall correctly was recorded here in Limerick in Xeric Studios back in 1987-88.

Now two questions...

1. Do you have the entire eponymously titled Golden Horde album that I Never Came Down was on back in 90/91?

2. Can I have a copy? :)

Excellent. I have it on tape and had transferred it over to mp3 but part of the tape was crunched and I lost the whole intro to 'Paula'. Sound was ropey at best on the rest of it. After Whipping Boys Heartworm it is, for my money, THE finest Irish rock'n'roll record ever.

Just to clarify or correct on an earlier point about Sandie Shaw ...it was Hand In Glove -not What Difference Does it Make she covered back in 1984. The Smiths actually played on it.

Really enjoying the mix Optimist, a lot of stuff on here I've never heard, and probably would never have heard if it weren't for this CD. The tracks I knew (Louden, A House, Vega 4, Mogwai and Leftfield) are all quality choices, and of the ones I didn't know the Frank Turner, Band of Horses, Negativland (love the Casey Casum talk :D) and Wily Mason tracks are the standouts.

Not totally gone on the Boxer Rebellion, will give it another few listens and see what I think though, and I've always had a great dislike for the Sisters of Mercy from the days of my brother playing them none stop whilst I was trying to play my Commodore 64 so I'm not liking that track but other than that it's a top mix

In fairness there's no inbetween with the Sisters Of Mercy you either love them or hate them!
Back in the day they were one of the best so called "goth bands" around.

Enjoyed it very much, Optimist, some great stuff on there.

I very much did like the Boxer Rebellion track, will be checking them out.
Other stand-outs for me: Band of Horses - excellent opener; Leftfield, of course; Sandie Shaw - great to hear that one again; A House*, of course times two (shame on you Monzo, never heard of A House??? Good Lord!!! :p ); Willy Mason (won this in a radio phone-in a year or so ago :D) and Iain Archer who I'd not heard of before but sounds excellent.
Love the Vega 4 track too, one of those you know but don't know you know. You know?
Brave move putting Negativland in too, kudos for that. Hugely influential band on the cut-up and mash-up scenes.

* btw, all this talk of Golden Horde and Whipping Boy, while admirable in intent, is fundamentally incorrect. On Our Big Fat Merry-Go-Round by A House is the best ever Irish album. By a street! :)

"I Am The Greatest" is their best album in my opinion. You'll surely remember "Endless Art" when you hear it. It was one of the most original and distinctive Irish hits of the time.

Seriously, On Our Big Fat Merry-Go-Round, far and away their best, full of spiky, punchy, punky pop gems.
I Am The Greatest is pretty good too mind. It's got Take It Easy On Me on it, probably my favourite song of theirs at the mo.

Sorry guys, I'm one of those infernally annoying people are always meaning to get around to doing things and always leaves them late, I'm afraid. Something always comes up to distract me. :o Apologies iof it's played havoc with the order.

Plus, I use iTunes to burn the CDs and it takes about 15-20 minutes per CD, and you can't use the computer while you're doing them as it freezes and slows so I never look forward to doing 9 and space them out accordingly over a few days!

Don't worry, TCM, I always leave these things too late too.

Got your cd today, and have it on now. Just saw your tracklist, but so far I knew most of the artists, if not all the songs. That's not a bad thing, by the way, and I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far.
The Divine Comedy one is one of my favourites.

Had a couple of listens TCM.
There is a lot of stuff on there that i listen to reguarly.Morrisey,Ramones,SLF,Pogues,Lizzy,Nick Cave.

My favourite would be SLF Half a Life Away. Its not very often you would hear a mellow one from them!
Emiliana Torrini i've heard of before, i've a couple of her songs on some compilations really like her voice.

Glory Box sounds as good as ever.
The only tracks that wouldn't appeal to me would be Lily Allen and Babyshambles.I've never saw the attraction in either of them

Overall i enjoyed the cd it was a nice mix.

Nice work TCM!
To be honest, was a little wary of it before listening, but it's not nearly so gloomy as you suggested. :)

Gets off to a cracking start with the first three tracks, and keeps the level high all through.
I love the Emiliana Torrini, Morrissey, and Miles Davis tracks in particular. Always liked Miles Davis for some reason, even though I hate jazz with a vengeance. Must admit I do like the Babyshambles one too.
Very interesting to hear House of the Rising Sun in a version closer to the original.
And Glory Box does indeed sound as good as ever! :)

Can you PM me the new address list? Cheers!

Only listened to thischarmingman's selection tonight as I hadn't a chance beforehand. Must say, on first listen, I really like the Nick Cave, SLF, Emiliana Torrini, Syd Barrett, The Impacts and Miles Davis songs (none of which I had heard before).

I'm liking Lily Allen's version of Naive despite never being too fond of the original. Incidentally I listened to Portishead's Dummy last week for the first time and it's quite something. Think Since I Left You by the Avalanches could be the highlight. Hadn't heard of the band or song so that's another name to check out. Overall, lovely stuff! :)

I forgot to mention The Avalanches too. Brilliant stuff, enough to finally get me to go get hold of the album (only knew Frontier Psychiatrist before now).

Anyway, Louden Up!!! (with due apologies to !!!) is away this morning.

No theme at all, but it turns out they're all tunes that benefit from a bit of volume.

Haha not in the way you are thinking! :D
Well, not all of them anyway. Not just grrrr sounds, could be a funky beat or a slinky bassline, a sweet keyboard riff or a nice skirl of pipes, or indeed myriad shimmering crystalline shards of icy guitar ( (C) Melody Maker 1988) that benefits from the loudening.

Also, a note of considered and considerable apology is in order for Optimist Prime and Man. I have yet to listen to either lads, however this ignorant detachment is owing to recent personal circumstance rather than anything else.
