Speculation based on the likes of you saying we would have held out in Glasgow if Whelan was there, in other words, speculation based on speculation :)
If only someone on this forum had some way to manipulate time, possibly through a plutonium-fueled time machine fitted to a retro-futurist vehicle, we could find out for sure...

Doc Brown isn't required to verify this one :)

What the sagely Doc Brown might have said is that if we had held out in Glasgow courtesy of Whelan being implanted via a delorean, we wouldn´t have had Randolph's inch perfect assist for Long's winner against Germany, because of the disturbance to the space-time continuum.

Glenn Whelan injures himself clambering out of his car two days ago (http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/irelands-glenn-whelan-struck-by-bizarre-back-injury-34607093.html) and no one has made an Old Man Whelan/'sure he was using muscles he never uses on the pitch' gag...
More than a bit disappointed to be honest.

John O'Shea voted the Irish squad's least attractive player winning the coveted ‘I Don’t Care How Rich You Are, It’s Still a No’ award.
Seamus Coleman awarded the prestigious ‘Only After 5 Beers’ award.
Glenn Whelan snagged the ‘Least Likely to Last the 90 Minutes’ award.
But the biggest winner is Shane Long who beat Jeff Hendrick to be awarded 'Ireland's sexiest player'.
Even though his picture that accompanies the article is possibly the least flattering picture I have ever seen of him.

To paraphrase Paul, at least it's good that the papers actually notice we have a football team again.

I can't edit posts on mobile without the post being deleted.
I'm no expert when it comes to this stuff, I concede to stutts on this one hands down, but I'd always have thought oshea was alright certainly not the worst in the visually appealing category.
Do these women or were they even aware that they were picking soccer players and that they were Irish internationals? If so then yes it can only be a good thing. You know you've got the public's imagination when your polling women about lads sex appeal.
Did ye see what I did there?😂

Because he's brutal. I'd love one of our midfield tyros to get in and take his place. I'd struggle to think of a particular attribute they'd fail to match him at.
And can think of many where they'd be much much better, (controlling the ball under no pressure, running, passing the ball 5 yards etc.)
I just wanted us to do well. That's all.

At 32, and no longer guaranteed his place, is Whelan likely to retire now? I think he'd be a useful asset for the WC qualifiers, but wouldn't be too surprised.

I'd like to have him if McCarthy gets injured. He's good at anchoring midfield. They just aren't great playing together. He performed better than McCarthy in the first two games of Euros. McCarthy flourished when Whelan was dropped.
I'd rather Whelan than Meyler as a DM
couldn't blame him if he decided to retire, though would prefer he stayed for one more campaign.
there will be a fair number of retirements i expect.

Meyler's not a DM anyway - he plays the role McCarthy has been trying to play when Whelan's in the team (and does it better). I hope Whelan stays on as he and McCarthy are the only ones we have of that type.

I find Meyler a bit too laid back to push for a place. Doesn't impose himself and has been caught napping and being too casual on more than one occasion for Ireland

I've had a bit of a thing for Gibson as a deep lying playmaker since Turners Cross.
Signed a contract extension to summer 2018. http://www.irishtimes.com/sport/soccer/english-soccer/glenn-whelan-extends-stoke-city-contract-1.2719020?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter

He must be closing in on the top 20 appearances for Stoke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Stoke_City_F.C._records_and_statistics#Top _20_most_appearances
Jimmy Greenhoff is currently 20th with 346
<EDIT>
Wikipedia has him on 307 appearances for Stoke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenn_Whelan#Club
Could pass Greenhoff before the end of the season

If he did, that would make 3 ex-Owls in the top 20 which is not exactly something to shout about. Their top guy, Eric Skeels, I never even heard of (or more likely can't remember) as he played in the 1970s which would be my era.

With all the excitement of youngsters like Manning, Kelly and Byrne, let's not forget how lucky we are to still have Glenn coming up on 500 games in league football and anchoring a winning midfield against Man Utd....
Edit. Goal Utd

I didn't think he was particularly good. United opened them up time and time again, just couldn't score until the very end.

If someone wasn't putting in a shift, he could never understand it and was always the first to let them know about it. Put it this way, you wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of one of his rants in the dressing room if you hadn't given everything in a match.
Abdoulaye Faye punched him in the face after being on the receiving end of one of those rants.
But where is he now?

Whelan has attracted interest from Aston Villa & Derby since Stoke's signing of Darren Fletcher. His current chief executive has been full of praise - http://www.stokesentinel.co.uk/glenn-whelan-hailed-by-chief-as-arguably-stoke-city-s-best-pound-for-pound-signing/story-30398233-detail/story.html
Glenn is one of our players who's done extremely well again. He has been, and is, a magnificent servant of the club and everybody connected with the club thinks the world of Glenn and what he has done.
You just need to look at his record. His record over nine-and-a-half years at this club has just been incredible.
You could almost argue that Glenn goes down pound-for-pound as one of our best- ever signings, given the appearances he's made, and every summer we bring players in and Glenn maintains his position.
He's been a magnificent servant and I'm sure will remain so unless and until that situation changes.
If I remember rightly, it was an 11pm on transfer deadline day in January 2008.
We were ahead of the clock, but people tend to use the time available!

Linked with Burnley in today's S*n.
No quotes from the player, Burnley or Stoke management, or any agents. The justification is that Burnley have money to spend after selling Keane to Everton, and need a replacement for Barton.

Whelan signed for Aston Villa on a two-year deal today. Probably a good move for him - they will be pushing for promotion and he should start regularly. However, it's a pity to see one less Irish player in the Premier League.

Also a pity to see Villa over-stocked with centre midfielders: Bjarnason and Lansbury were signed in January and Jedinak and Gardner are there two. If they play 3 in midfield what are the chances two will be Whelan and Hourihane and the other will be from those 4? I know Jedinak has played a bit at centre half and Gardner isn't a world-beater but if they got with 2 in midfield then Hourihane's development could be stunted.
