Geary was one of the stars this weekend. I watched the last two Sheffield United matches and Geary has played a key role in both. Stephen Quinn was a little more subdued but very effective on the left flank again, and did well to get the ball to Hulse for the winner.

    2 Stephen Kelly
    3 Steve Finnan
    4 Paul McShane
    5 John O'Shea

That was the back four vs. Czech Republic. I can't say I remember how well Kelly played, but if Geary is playing left full week in and week out in the premier league, he has to be our first choice, since Finnan is not comfortable on the left flank.

a back four of (Right to left) Finnan, McShane, Dunne, Geary has the potential to be very very mean, especially with Carsley sitting on top of them

The facts are that we will never have a true embarrassment of riches in our squad pickings so in that case, players who will give everything for the jersey should deserve their place, its their attitude which gets results, to make up for the ability. Geary, IMO, has an excellent attitude, as exhibited consistently throughout this season, much better than the seemingly disinterested O'Shea. When we're talking about the Irish left back position, I think its a bit ironic and rich of us to start being selective and choosy...
I would definately agree with that, when I first saw him play he seemed to be putting twice as much effort in as anyone else one the pitch!! Imagine if everyone else was doing the same, we would be a hard team to beat then!
The more you try the better you get, and I think you need those types of players in a team, players who don't give up, especially if you are play more 'cultured' players in the team. 'Trying' should be considered one of the most important skills.

I'd have him behind Harte, if only for the free kicks which in a full campaign should be 2/3 goals. O'Shea is not suited to full back as it requires energy he doesnt have.

And what about the 2/3 goals Harte will give away? I won't forget Japan/Korea in a hurry. Geary played for Wednesday when they were in Division 1 and he was no more than average at that level. Unless he has made great strides since he went across the city, I really doubt if he is close to international standard. One good performance on TV doesn't make an international. He is in the Alan Quinn class - will never quite have the ability to really make it but won't be for the lack of trying.

I think O'Shea tries by the way. He just has that style that makes him look laid back and languid. Interesting that SAF brought him on when they were chasing the game against West Ham Centre-half should eventually be his position.
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

I think the real check is how many more goals will he 'give away' than other possibilities at LB. I'm not sure in that case he is any worse than the others.

We've actually done well recently with him in defence. He played 5 for us games last season (280 minutes) and we didn't concede a goal when he was on the pitch. I still think he's our best left back, pity he has been injured all season.

I think geary should definately be in the squad, in fairness, harte although he may sneak an odd free kick, is liable to cost you games. O'Shea, should never play left full again, he is too disinterested and consistantly plays sloppy passes. I think finnan should revert back back to the right, its silly when you think about it, one of the best right full backs in the Premiership and we play him on the left(granted as a result of limited left full alternatives). I

I think putting Geary in the Squad at least is a no brainer

Definite No Brainer. Its ridiculous that the idea of playing a Champions League winning/Premiership's finest Right Back playing on the left is even mooted... Now that we have Geary in the picture, the full backs should really pick themselves. Kelly is doing well at high flying Birmingham, mind. A nice back up. He'll be playing regular Premiership football next year.

I'm still weary about the fact that he's not a natural left back. I've still yet to see him play there though tbf.

    Are they all central midfielders?
This is what I've compiled from Sheffield United's site

S Quinn usually plays on the wing. He looks a talent. In his first few Premiership games he has banged in with 2 goals, has a handful of assists and been MOTM twice. Can't ask more than that from a young player though we all know things can go wrong but he looks the biz already even if he doesn't get any better.

Good free kick I thought, with Harte injured there's an argument for having him on the right just for the free kick goals.

A player can never be included just for taking free kicks.

Some people made a lucrative career out of that and being friends with Tom Cruise...

MOM of the match performance from Stephen Quinn last night, this guy has really burst onto the scene in the last few months. He's starting to look the real deal, premature I know but he's certainly an exciting propect. Peter Reid was raving about both him and Long on Sky last night.

Apparently Stephen and Alan's Sister's boyfriend was shot in Clondalkin last week. For Stephen to come and give a MOM performance last night shows absolutely massive character. In the circumstances it seems like quite a superficial thing to say but I'll take that any day of the week in an Irish squad.

I've yet to see him play. What type of player is he? An out and out tricky winger?

Very direct, small but quite strong. Good crosser of the ball. Loves to have a crack. Has a powerful shot. Not exceptionally quick or skillful but seems decent in both areas.

He looks a better player to me than your mate McGeady judging solely on the last two months since he broke into the team.

He certainly scores and sets up more goals than McGeady though we'll see how each develops over time but Quinn on form looks to be already a very good Premiership player.

On reflection he's been a better player than Ashley Young since he broke into the Sheffield Utd team. Both are wingers playing for poor Premiership sides (though in fairness Sheffield United are far better than Watford). He's also younger. How Young cost 9 million I'll never know.
