European Division 1 Cricket Championship 2008

Ireland got underway today with an easy win over Norway at Milverton. The spinners did the damage (Kidd 4-25, McCallan 2-28) as Norway were skittled for 119. Ireland chased it inside 23 overs with Wilson unbeaten on 47*. Ireland won by eight wickets.

There was a massive shock in Balrothery, though, where Italy beat the Netherlands by eight runs. Batting first, Italy posted a respectable 181 which the Dutch would have expected to chase comfortably. However, they folded for 173 with plenty of overs to spare.

The third game between Denmark (224-8) and Scotland at Malahide has been disrupted by rain. Scotland are 151-3 off 28 overs and should win comfortably if sufficient further play is possible.

    Subsequent results.

    Netherlands 142 (47.1 overs, K O'Brien 3-30)
    Ireland 143-3 (29 overs, N O'Brien 58*, A Botha 38)
    Ireland by seven wickets.

    Norway 43 (21 overs, S Weeraratna 6-24)
    Scotland 44-1 (8.2 overs)
    Scotland by nine wickets.

    Italy 212 (49.0 overs, P Petricola 62*, MH Andersen 4-30, B Chawla 4-48)
    Denmark 215-9 (49.5 overs, LH Andersen 47, P Petricola 3-37)
    Denmark by one wicket.

    Italy 158-6 (50.0 overs)
    Ireland 159-6 (36.5 overs, P Stirling 56*)
    Ireland by four wickets.

    Netherlands 117 (39.2 overs, E Szwarczynski 53, J Blain 5-22)
    Scotland 120-4 (22.2 overs, R Watson 54*)
    Scotland by six wickets.

Norway 206 (49.5 overs, Shahbaz Butt 46*, AJ Chawla 3-34)
    Denmark 210-2 (38.0 overs, F Klokker 119*, M Pedersen 59)
    Denmark by eight wickets.

Ireland were ropey enough in their win over the impressive Italians and throughout the tournament. The Dutch have been terribly disappointing and Norway have looked out of their depth in Div 1.

Tomorrow's ODI between Scotland and Ireland at Clontarf is effectively the tournament decider. Scotland must be favourites on current form.
