Why do commentators say defeat to when it is defeat by and loss to? Why does this annoy me? Why does Bill O'Herlihy annoy me. Why do I follow teams that will NEVER win anything (other than the Celtic Cup). Why are traffic lights green and red? Why did someone who sold Milltown become President of the FAI? Why am I asking so many questions when I should be working?
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.
22 degrees and 73% humidity is not particularly enjoyable when stuck in this office.

To your comment, computer says not completely.
Brigham Young University's Coca Corpus (of 450 million words) of American English reports 113 usages of 'defeat by' compared with 107 usages of 'defeat to'. Definitely not enough of a difference to suggest that 'defeat to' is incorrect.
But the same university also helps house the British National Corpus which shows totals of 292 instances versus 34 for the former and the latter.
So, both acceptable in US English, but less so in British English (though 34 instances is enough to argue that the usage isn't 'wrong').
Yours,
Pedantor.

"Defeated by" surely would be acceptable?
Wormy, I would direct your ire towards your countrymen's in inability to differentiate pluralism with regards to teams and groups.
Liverpool is European Champion! GAH GAH GAH!

try doing your test in the north, and then driving with R plates for a year. Learn to use roundabouts!!!!
i believe in one man, one vote. i should be that one man with that one vote.
ALWAYS ON TOUR!

I've spent the last 6 years with my license (+ some with a learner's permit) dodging female and Asian drivers (I'd assume there aren't nearly as many Asians there as here, unless you live on Craggy Island) and have managed to maintain a perfect driving record -- and that's predominately driving an SUV...roundabouts and sheep don't frighten me. You've already admitted you're "petrified" to drive here so surely that would mean its more difficult to drive here?

My fear is that there's gonna be Americans on the road. And Canadians. I'm driving from Vancouver (BC, not WA) to Portland.

Well to be honest it just sounds like you drive like a granny. I will say this, at least in Chicago there can be half a foot of snow and people will be fine on the roads, but if there is even a slight drizzle of rain all of the sudden its gridlock and this was very evident today on Lake Shore Drive.
I can only imagine what it must've been like for Stutts if he was driving you to Poland, especially if it was on the Autobahn..."slow down," "you're going to fast," "you're going to get us killed."![]()
