I'd like to see Stephen McPhail come on for Glenn Whelan and Daryl Murphy to come on for Kevin Doyle.

One substitution at least from Trappatoni.

Republic of Ireland V Colombia - Thursday, 29th May 2008 - Friendly - Craven Cottage

well Im delighted after that, wasnt the greatest ever performance. we rode our luck a bit in first half but in second half we looked very solid and for once I was totally convinced we were going be able to hold onto the one goal lead. once we get our first choice center midfield back I think it will add hugely to us because Miller and Whelan were totally outclassed, but on the plus side I thought Delaney was very good.
    Its really not that complicated!!!

    Post match review

Where do you start the good points were

Keily looked great, Dunne and Mc Shane played well, Mc Geady looked good and Doyle and Keane looked fine good work rate but no service resulting in Keane playing in midfield in the second half

Whealen and Miller were poor good work rate but you see that in a pub team, Keogh was lost all match (he is a striker) O shea poor. I would have liked to see some more subs. Its a win but not a convincing one. We need somemore bottle in midfield, natual wingers and players playing in there best positions

I agree with everything you just wrote. McGeady was very poor in the first half but came back and was much better in the second, helping out Delaney.

Miller and Whelan are no more than fringe players at best. The game is won and lost in the middle of the park and we were very very lucky tonight. Kiely was outstanding, he should be our first choice 'keeper from now on if Given has more fitness problems.

The pitch is like Landsdowne, tight and small. Suits us. Croke Park is wide and open and is disastrous for us. We should not be playing any matches there. The pitch makes a huge difference eg Chelsea have never won at Villa Park.

Defense did well. Midfield was terrible. Strikers were terrible, especially Keane who really looks like he has been on the beer again.

We were too attacking in 1st half and midfield didn't sit deep enough.

I would of liked to have seen Scannell thrown on towards the end to run at the Colombians, and maybe a few other substitutions, apart from that there can't be many complaints except for Jim Beglin...."A poor error"?! Whats that all about

I thought O'Shea played well. Always looked comfortable. Kiely played a 9/10. Very impressed with Robbie Keane's attitude and play. McGeady played well. Dunne showed his class especially with that clearance off the line. Delaney looks like he is destined to play with a premiership side.

Kiely was outstanding like, and McShane and Dunne had good games.

Im concerned about the lack of urgency in our play. In fact, thats why I believe we can't get the best out of McGeady. I hope to see both him and Duffer on the wings for the qualifiers but we need to get the ball to them quickly so they can use their pace. McGeady is Celtic's focal point, whoever has the ball the first thing they do is give it to Aiden. We need to start doing this too.

Miller had a decent enough game but Whelan was way out of his depth.

    agree with the pitch thing.
you cant say the defence did well - they were at see in the first half and were saved by kiely again and again. whelan and miller were a joke. and keane and doyle got no service. and the keane remark is just stupid and petty (are you brian kerr in disguise?)

We were outplayed for most of the match and as such its a good result, mc shane played much better and im happy he got that chance, The core of the team is there mc geady has to play but can play right or left side of midfield our team effectivly played 4-5-1 in the second half of a friendly to preserve a 1-0 win. The 2 reids have to start and we need Finnan back- would liked to have seen more of Wes I hear good things about him

Kiely was brilliant. A worthy challenger to Shay.

Defence did well. Conceded a few chances in the first half but generally looked a lot more organised than under Stan.

Central midfield was almost non-existant. Completely outplayed. Keogh was a bit lost out wide. McGeady by far the pick of midfield. Should have had a penalty.

Keane and Doyle in and out of the game. To be fair they weren't getting great service.

    My review:

Kiely- top class. Fantastic double save at the end of the first half.

O'Shea- did what was expected of him, didn't get forward enough though.

Dunne- A couple of good clearances.

McShane- Did what was necessary, good for him to put in a decent performance considering his poor run of form.

Delaney- Again solid performance, but didn't get forward enough.

The defense overall need some work- there were a few communication problems that would have led to a goal against better opposition.

Keogh- Full of running, but not a winger.

Miller- Good tackle/setup for Robbie for the goal. Apart from that predictably anonymous.

Whelan- Did alright in the holding role, but didn't show for the ball enough.

McGeady- Some good runs, but very little to show for it (no end product).

Robbie- Good for him to bag a goal, but didn't get enough service.

Doyle- Not enough service to rate.

Subs not on long enough to evaluate.

Kiely showed what exactly we were missing last year when we had shams like Henderson in goal, he's a fantastic keeper and importantly he has a great attitude

I thought the first half free kick showed great imagination and should never have been blown up for off-side. Straight from the Tardelli locker. Delaney timed his run perfectly.

I've got it recorded from about 36 minutes onwards off sopcast. I only have 20kbs upstream though.

Another iffy performance. Solid if not spectacular. The MF pairing of Miller and Whelan is are uncreative and also couldn't hold onto the ball to give the defence a breather. Like was mentioned after the last game they are probably too similar and don't compliment eachother so well. I would have liked to have seen Garvan come on for Whelan, only because a Whelan-Garvan pairing would have been too inexperienced.

As a result of this poor pairing we were overun in MF and had to defend for large spells of the game. Some of the passing from the Colombians was excellent. When watching this game I couldn't help but think of when we got pasted 4-0 by Holland a few years ago. I have no doubth that if this was a Staunton team we would have shipped 2 or 3 goals but apart from a few scary moments we defended well. That for me was a sign that Trap is starting to but his stamp on the team and that the players have an idea of what they are supposed to be doing. Again not a great game but acceptable for now. I just hope we start creating more chances when the likes of the two Reids and Duff are available. Or maybe Trap just wants to concentrate on making us solid and unbeatable and hope that we create the odd chance?
Boring football with improved results. I would accept it if it works.
