These days, at least you wouldn't be shot down for making such a suggestion.
Even at his worst defensively, Harte was always a real threat from set pieces and open play. I don't think we ever got back what we lost after he was dropped, even though we've been defensively more solid (freak Staunton results notwithstanding).
It is never beyond the realm of possibility, at least that is what I have to keep telling myself

Definitely a good set piece specialist but a lack of pace and all left foot were major drawbacks.
Hasn't his pace now completely gone? I always had a soft spot for Harte, but I think it's surely too late. Wouldn't make any sense trying to push Killer out the door only to give the Hartebreak Kid a game. Best to stick with youth. But fair play to the guy for the career renaissance.

He was never quick to begin with but he basically walks around now. Centrehalf at the lower level still works for him.
Maybe at centrehalf he can get away with it, but out wide as a fullback I think he would be totally exposed.
i can only agree he would be exposed at full back, but there is part of me that thinks Killer is being exposed just as much as Harte would be likely to be, and those free-kicks are a threat.

Zenidine Kilbane can still run a bit (Ian was slow on his fast days) and Ian is all left foot.
World class set piece taker in his prime. If only we could have special teams for the set pieces (a la american football)
Shane Long and Ian Harte have both scored penalties for Reading today - I think Harte took the second penalty as Long had been fouled to win the penalty.

Ian Harte thoughts on Irish players playing abroad taken fom the star. Not sure what the full Star article says and its probably taken out of context but I find the part about Brian Kerr telling Harte that if he moved to Spain he would not be picked for Ireland a bit ludicrous? sounds unbelievable to me.
If true, (and in fairness Ian Harte is a fairly candid character) what a ridiculously small-minded attitude from an international manager.“Brian Kerr said that if I went to Spain I would be out of the picture. I wasn’t picked in an Irish squad for about a year and a half. It was a fantastic experience but it was disappointing to miss out on a load of caps. Brian did eventually bring me in for the Israel and San Marino games, and I scored in both of them.”
I think Harte's exclusion from the Irish picture had a lot more to do with his massive injury problems during his time with Levante. At one stage he missed nearly a year of football, and it seemed like he never really got a long run with the team.
That said, I don't get why Harte would lie about Kerr saying something like that, so who knows?

to be honest i do vaguely remember an accusation along those lines thrown at Kerr but cant remember if it was related to Harte. I thought i read it on here too.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

Scored his 7th of the season for Reading, doing well at left back for them this year. He's a year younger than Kilbane, performing in a division higher than him and is a specialist rather than a converted left back. Why isn't he on the Irish squad exactly?
Because he's crap defensively. Go back and watch the Spain match from the 2002 World Cup. Scary stuff. I remember Roy Keane gave him a chance when he was at Sunderland and Ian Harte shipped seven goals to Everton and never played in the Premiership again.
If Harte returned to our starting eleven, I'd have to install a defibrillator in my living room.
