    Selcuk Tidim

Anybody know any more about this lad? The name sounds Turkish. One to hang on to?

    Republic of Ireland 1-0 Italy
    Tidim 67

The Republic of Ireland Under-16 recorded victory against Italy on Sunday in their first fixture of the Malta International tournament.

Selcuk Tidim’s struck the only goal of the game with 13 minutes remaining, putting the finishing touch to a flowing move that involved Shane Murray, Oliver Kelly and Ryan Connolly.

The FC Pauli striker connected with Connolly’s cross from the left, giving the Italian goalkeeper no chance.

The goal was Tidim’s fourth in his past four matches after the German-born striker declared for Ireland through his mother.

His rich vein of form began on his debut against Belgium and he followed that up with a goal in each of the matches against Israel.

Ireland’s main threat in the first half came through centre-back Mark O’Brien. Twice the Cherry Orchard defender got the better of his marker in the box from corner kicks but he saw one of his headers saved and the other angle over the crossbar.

Tidim was presented with a great chance to break the deadlock, also in the first half, but contrived to blast his close-range shot over the bar following another teasing centre by Connolly.

More chances were spurned by Oliver Kelly and Shane Murray in the second half but it was left for Tidim to secure the victory on 67 minutes.

Irish manager Vincent Butler said in the aftermath of the win. “It was very pleasing performance and all the players did the jobs they were asked to do.

“Selcuk came up with another goal for us and, in the end, we could have won the game by a larger margin.”

Butler has guaranteed the seven players not in the line-up against Italy a starting place in the team which meets Malta on on Tuesday. Ireland will complete their group on Thursday by playing Turkey, who defeated Malta 2-0 in the other group game played on Sunday.

Ireland: Ciaran Gallagher (Castlefin), Leigh Swords (Belvedere), Daniel Joyce (Belvedere), Mark O'Brien (Cherry Orchard), Anthony O'Connor (Kilreen Celtic), Sean Stewart (St. Kevin’s Boys), Shane Murray (Arklow Town), Sean Skelly (Belvedere), Ryan Connolly (Derby County), Oliver Kelly (Reading), Selcuk Tidim (FC St.Pauli).
Substitutes: Daniel Fitzsimons (Millwall) for Swords (65 mins) and Anthony Bolger (St. Kevin’s Boys) for Bolger (75 mins).

I asked about him a few months ago. He's German born to I think a Turkish father and Irish mother. He scored over 100 goals in a season for the St Pauli youths. Germany and Turkey tried to get him to commit to them but he chose us.

/edit - just noticed his eligibilty is confirmed in that article.

Was just looking him up on the St Pauli website. He's just signed a 'long-term' (whatever that means) contract and has played for their U17 team. They have a short report on the Ireland game here.

The U17s are looking good for promotion from the regional league to the Bundesliga, apparently.

Tidim (seems to be sometimes spelled Tidem) also was chosen best player at an underage tournament in January.

The senior team are struggling somewhat in the Bundesliga 2, so in one way a good place to get opportunities but obviously long-term they're a selling club. I'm guessing Hamburg is his home town, but St Pauli has a more mixed background than HSV, ethnically speaking.

Apparently he joined the St.Pauli set up when he was 9 and has scored over 600 goals for them since then.

I certainly hope Tidim gets treated better is my point

I want everyone here to notice how he brought up Connolly completely unprovoked, not me

Well one thing I've noticed with foreign born players, or players with foreign accents who decide to play for Ireland is that when things are going well, they're just one of the lads, but when things are going bad he's an "English so and so," or "Scotland's rubbish," etc...

Clinton Morrison is a perfect example of this kind of treatment. When selected, he's one of our hardest working players, yet I've seen a number of posters question his commitment and criticize his performances for us. While his connections to Ireland may be tenuous, his commitment after having been selected should not ever be questioned. He's worked his socks off on a number of occasions, and scored some crucial goals (even in away games, remember Israel!).

I realize this tends to happen in society at large as well (scapegoating minorities during economic hard times for example), but you can bet an unsavoury element of the Irish support will have something to say totally unrelated to football when young Tidim goes through a tough spell, or misses a sitter in a crucial match.

Sounds like one for the future, OUR future. What's the criteria for commiting to a certain country. Can he change allegiances until senior level if he wants or is he now Irish and that's it?

Glad he's opted for us because by all accounts the Turks are pretty hot on getting declarations from and second or third generation players abroad.

And in that World cup he took one of the most pathetic pens I have ever seen, he is a bottler of the highest order which you think would make him humble but the arrogant **** thought he should be the first striker on the team

Well I can only speak for myself, but I'm rather sure my hatred of Clinton isn't because I'm scapegoating a minority, but rather because he's an utter, utter ****, an average player, a moron, and once bragged about learning how to drink a pint of Guinness, presumably because he proper loves Eire. Innit?

Is it just me or does nearly every thread about an Irish player descend into an argument of some kind about David Connolly?

We're scouring the globe it seems. Tidim scored again against Malta as well as New Zealand born Tim Pilkington off Freiburg.

I wonder is this him posting on Leo Messi's site:
    Tim Pilkington (08-04-2006 01:48)
Hi Leo my name is Tim Pilkington. I live for football and everything in my life is about it. The ball makes me happy and watching you makes me happy too. I wish you the best of luck in the future and to achieve all you wish and more. God bless and we will meet soon in the near future.

Haha, suprisingly you believe Don Givens...yet he alienates half of the players he comes into contact with

irishfan86, Morrison and Andy O'Brien seem to get it worst for "only playing for Ireland because England wouldn't have them," I agree its stupid.

Don Givens is a beautiful man and I won't have the likes of you slandering him .
Seriously though, even if Givens made the whole thing up I still wouldn't be a fan of Connolly, not sure why we are even talking about him as he is really kind of rrelevant
