Boll1x it was, it was a very funny gesture that had the desired effect of getting into Keane's head. Hard to have an impact on a game when you're off the pitch in a sulk coz someone took the **** out of you. Keane was the idiot that day, he made an utter tit of himself and was totally unprofessional. Let himself and his team down, had it been somone else no doubt his Corkness would have berated him for it. Can you imagine how he'd react if a Sunderland player did something like that tomorrow? It was typical of the hypocrisy of the man.

Interesting stuff, even if a bit dated, about Keane, Mick Mc and Souness.

Favourite part (because it echoes my own sentiments):

What's been your best moment in football?

Scoring the winner against Holland in the World Cup qualifier in 2001. The Dutch had already booked their hotels in Japan and Korea so it was lovely to wipe the smiles off their faces. Fantastic, absolutely fantastic time.

Much more interesting quote than the ones which started this thread

In his football days Jason McAteer was nicknamed after Trigger from Only Footballs and Horses, Peckham’s finest road sweeper. Apparently McAteer once spotted Jimmy White in a nightclub and tried to get his attention by yelling the catchphrase “One hundred and eighty” to the snooker player. Another rumour alleges that Alan Thompson once asked him to pass the tomato ketchup and McAteer replied: “Red or brown?”

The stories are probably false, because, if this interview with Jarlath Regan on the Irishman Abroad podcast is anything to go by, McAteer is one of the most articulate men in football.

he's admitted most of the stories about him are true
Saw him at Off The Ball live before Euro 2012 in The Mercantile, and he had the place in the palm of his hand. As you say, very articulate, knows his audience, and has his comedy timing down down to an art

My favourite story about him is one I actually saw happen. He was on Soccer AM one morning with Razor Ruddock, who kept calling him "Dave" after Rodney in Only Fools And Horses*. Anyway, it's coming to the end of the show and they're doing the 3rd Eye, where people send in funny clips you might have missed from games. It's a Spanish game, and a fan is celebrating a goal in the front row of the stand. His hat's fallen off, and he climbs over the barrier in front of him to get it back. Climbing back to his seat, he slips and hops his head off the barrier. Cut back to the studio and everyone's laughing at it (to be fair, it is pretty funny) so they play the clip again. Back in the studio and Ruddock is absolutely splitting himself laughing, even the hosts say "alright mate, it's not that funny", so he answers, "no, no, you don't understand. Dave McAteer's just turned to me and said 'You'd think he'd learn his lesson the first time!'"

*McAteer's nickname was Trigger before he came to Liverpool, but there was another player with that nickname when he got there (I think it was Rob Jones) so they changed McAteer's nickname to Dave

Yeah I've heard him tell the 180 story himself, and the one about asking for a pizza to be divided into four slices, as he'd never eat eight. He obviously plays to the gallery but better than taking himself too seriously.

I remember watching that game and thinking the red card was harsh. Some blinkers on.

Like many footballers (and indeed probably in many walks of life) he found it hard to cope with retirement and hence the depression. I suppose the difference with sportsmen is that they had the adulation and the retirement comes in their mid-thirties with a lifetime stretching ahead of them not knowing what to do, especially for someone like Jason who was unlikely to make it as a coach, manager or even a pundit.

went in to Eason's on Saturday to get his book signed. Was in good form and chatted for a few minutes. The lad in front of me was on crutches, so McAteer was asking him about the injury, what exercises he was doing for recovery, gave him some advice, etc. Nice to see.
