Put these clubs in order of Size

As an Evertonian i still live under the illusion we are a big club!
But these are the "similar sized" clubs
so....in order.........who are the biggest, work down.......
    Everton
    Man City
    Newcastle
    Villa
    Spurs
    Leeds
    Chelsea
    Sunderland

I do not have them in order yet.........have to think about it!
    How would others rank them?
    Cheers

on what basis are leeds, newcastle, villa or spurs bigger clubs than everton?!?!?!

If you put together all the trophies that they have won, they still wouldn't have many as everton.

Everton are the 4th biggest club in england, i'd maybe accept chelsea pushing everton down to 5th but that is solely down to money, but after that, the rest are nowhere near as big as everton

You forgot to put in the extra 4 there, we'll blame it on a typo.

On the basis of history Nottingham Forest are bigger than any of them ( 2 European Cup wins) and Villa only won the European Cup once. Everton are bigger than Leeds, Newcastle ,Sunderland, Man City and Spurs, because they've not been relegated since they last got into the top flight!

if you think that villa have won 2 european cups, fair enough but if you check, you'll they have won just 1. And i think everton's 9 league titles more than beats whatever else villa have done, 2 league titles last century

The bottom two on this list are ludicrous for opposite reasons

Chelseas are in a different planet to the mediocre clubs there (regardless of history, wise up FFS)

And what have Sunderland done to earn a place there??

Aston Villa would be my pick out of the remainder as they're the biggest club in Englands second city

Newcastle and Leeds would be ahead of Spurs IMO as they come from one club towns, have large support bases and have tended to compete at the highest level (Leeds recent troubles aside)

But really tbh, once you take Chelsea and Sunderland out of it, they're all much of a mediocre muchness

A lot of sense in what LTID is saying there. There's probably a formula out there to difinitively answer the question that would take account of turnover, capacity, trophies won and trophies competed for etc...

Everton may have more trophies than anyone else on that list but most of the people who won them are old men now. Newcastle may have the highest capacity ground but haven't actually won anything in decades. Leeds troubles are well known yet I'd speculate that of that lot listed they'd have the highest "non-local" support. (I'll declare a vested interest there ...Leeds supporter). So it's a complex sum to compute.

My bad, thought they had as I thought I had read something about them and Forest having the same amount of European Cups as United. Still think they are bigger than Everton though

The posters making snide remarks about Everton may be interested to hear that, not only are you correct re Everton in England, but they are also the 4th biggest English club worldwide (bigger than Chelsea, smaller than Man U, Liverpool and Arsenal).

Or at least they were 3 seasons ago when a mate of mine did independent research on it whilst he was Everton's Commercial Manager. Since then they'll have consolidated that position - particularly in China, where Everton has a very large fan base. Chelsea do not have a strong international fan-base at all, and the club recognises that as a problem iteself.

Trophes and history do not determine the size of a club, for one simple reason. Clubs fortunes change, but their trophy count and history don't once they're written. A club can have had a glorious history in the past, but that doesn't make them big now, or prevent them from sliding into mediocrity in the future. The opposite is also true - a team can be big now, despite having had a fairly mediocre past (e.g. Chelsea).

For perspective, Huddersfield Town have won the league as many times as Chelsea, but I doubt anyone here would claim the Yorkshire club are the same size. Other clubs with glorious pasts in terms of trophies and history that would not be considered amonst the biggest now would include Forest, Preston and Huddersfield.

A more sensible measure of how big a team is would be its fan-base at any particular point in time. Therefore - Newcastle, with a big fan-base, one of the largest staiums in the league, and a fairly empty trophy cabinet, are clearly bigger than Wanderers FC or WBA, even though both have won more trophies in the past than the Toon.

Much as I despise Everton, deep down I will always consider Everton to be a big club. The should consistently be a top 6 side in the PL and be challenging for the cups. Man city are also a massive club. You only have to be present on matchday in Manchester city centre to realise this. Out of the group above :

    Everton
    Citeh
    Spurs
    Chelsea

are most definitely big clubs and the table at the end of this season will reflect that.

Newcastle, Villa, Leeds, Sunderland fall into the sleeping giants/clubs with potential category. Sunderland are very poor at the moment and it is only a matter of time before Keane packs his backs and starts laying the blame for the clubs failure at Quinn's/Staff/tea ladies door. As I said before they will go down.
