Disagree with you. He can play centre half and arguably can play right back. I'm just saying that in my mind, and in the mind of a few others I would venture, that he's well down on both counts. I'd actually have Andy O'Brien ahead of him too. Darren O'Dea has shown (briefly) that he actually has proper potential, and can keep his head in pressure situations (eg Celtic Champions Lge) ->this would point to something else being up with O'Dea; injuries, loss of faith with manager, loss of confidence etc. Whereas unfortunately the image I'm always, always always going to remember Paul McShane for is Paul watching Henry collect a punt into the box that he should have cleared.
I'm well aware that there are only 8 for 4 places, but when there is versatility there amongst the back line (which there is without doubt - OShea, Foley, Clark, Kelly can all play numerous positions across the back)
Agree with your basic point though - the club the fella is going to shouldn't be the reason whether his international career ends or not. That is down to his ability and the ability of those ahead of him. It's on that premise that his int career is finished :-)
Edit
And as CD said, Paul McShane, pace?
