Disagree with you. He can play centre half and arguably can play right back. I'm just saying that in my mind, and in the mind of a few others I would venture, that he's well down on both counts. I'd actually have Andy O'Brien ahead of him too. Darren O'Dea has shown (briefly) that he actually has proper potential, and can keep his head in pressure situations (eg Celtic Champions Lge) ->this would point to something else being up with O'Dea; injuries, loss of faith with manager, loss of confidence etc. Whereas unfortunately the image I'm always, always always going to remember Paul McShane for is Paul watching Henry collect a punt into the box that he should have cleared.

I'm well aware that there are only 8 for 4 places, but when there is versatility there amongst the back line (which there is without doubt - OShea, Foley, Clark, Kelly can all play numerous positions across the back)

Agree with your basic point though - the club the fella is going to shouldn't be the reason whether his international career ends or not. That is down to his ability and the ability of those ahead of him. It's on that premise that his int career is finished :-)

    Edit
And as CD said, Paul McShane, pace?
Here they come! It’s the charge of the “Thanks” Brigade!

Compared to O'Dea but then I might be comparing a carthorse to a donkey (I am not saying which is which).
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

There are lots of players without pace in the league. I haven't seen much of O'Dea but from what I've seen he hasn't looked particularly slow.

I would be. I find it difficult to imagine the circumstances. Maybe if he gets promoted, but his position will be one of the first they find a replacement for. Unfortunately.

Usually not known for his wit, the Barnsley manager said "it was a classic case of handbags".

His initial tackle did look a bit heedless.

A load of nothing really but he was stupid to make contact with the player's face.

I wonder would he have got away with the first (a bit over aggressive(at least)) if he had not gone off on one when he himself was tackled.

And Er' what direction was Paul actually playing after he "won" the ball ?

Decent piece on McShane from the Examiner. "Yes we can beat them" is his verdict on Italy. Is féidir linn Paul, Is féidir linn.

There's also the revelation that Liam Lawrence has followed in Mel Gibson's illustrious footsteps and vacated the screen for a position behind the camera. His first production, "Hunty does Druid's Glen (The Passion of the Hunt)" has already received a positive review from Ireland's latest captain.

"The thing was," McShane grinned, "at the first hole he stepped up and thought he would cream it but he went right into the ditches. Liam Lawrence videoed it and it is a good video."
To answer the original poster's question though...no, probably not at this stage.

McShane out for a month with calf injury: http://www.thisishullandeastriding.c...ail/story.html
Not going to see him against Croatia so, and if he misses that game, he's unlikely to play against Slovakia or Russia

Danny, we were all thinking that when Tets say it but if you end up right I'll be on the first flight to Manchester.

I didn't realise he was so involved and committed to cattle. Here's hoping the little moo pulls through.
