Unfortunately, you can't invent your own tournaments to tie a player to your football association. It's a friendly and only FIFA / UEFA approved competitions count towards international eligibility.

I wouldn't worry too much to be honest. As far as I'm aware, it would be unprecedented for McCarthy to change his allegiance now that he has been fully capped for Ireland. After everything he went through in Scotland, I'd consider if extremely unlikely that he would swap back to the Scots over being left out of one squad (but subsequently included, yay!).

i think we all know who to thank for that.

me, Noely's Guitar, Trapapony and Paul.

    No problem lads.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

That other thread attracted 71 replies. If the OP felt that way than he's entitled to post it. If it was complete rubbish no one would reply. Personally, I enjoy a bit of that anyway, even if I didn't agree that Trap should be sacked purely over McCarthy. It's nice to see any kind of discussion here when so often it's just clicking into the Jay O'Shea thread to find out he might be going on loan to Stevenage Borough.

Got to hand it to Trap. He was on a hiding to nothing if he had gone down the Andy Reid road with McCarthy. Thankfully he has done the right thing and brought him into the squad. He should see some playing time now.

As one who had a go at Trap on the 'untenable' thread, I have got to acknowledge the fact that he has now called up McCarthy. My fear was that he would just use players to try and qualify for Euro 2012 without blooding new players as part of creating transition in the team. From his actions and comments over the last week, it looks likely that Clarke, Coleman and McCarthy will get some time on the pitch which will be exciting and positive. Some could argue as to his motivation and purpose in doing this, but even if he has been pressured to do this, it's still a welcome development.

what's the betting people will blame Trapattoni for not knowing McCarthy was going to be pulled out of the squad ahead of the announcement?

Are you suggesting he would still want to be manager in 2014?

Considering that both Tardelli and Brady say that they have/had no influence on Trap once he has his mind made up, it would be the height of delusion to think that Trap in any way bowed to pressure to draft McCarthy into the squad. When the facts of McCarthy's recovery from injury were made known to Trap, he included him in the final squad because he rates McCarthy highly.
Trap is probably one of the most single minded managers in the game.

Reminds of the Brian Moore comment about Packie way back when, still makes me laugh thinking about it.

when the irish lads on teh way into the ground told him his name was pronounced -> bo-ner as opposed to bon-ner

And i didnt even think irish lads would know that word back in the god fearing, cb beating haze of the 80s.

This is relevant. Twente player switches from Morocco to Belgium after representing the former in a friendly international (fittingly against Northern Ireland).

Not really CD, i think everyone already knew that, unless its a competitive game it doesn't tie one(taiwan in a country accent) to a country.

It actually is pronounced Boner by a lot of people in Donegal and even spelt like that sometimes as well as Bonar.
Jimmy Magee usually pronounces it Boner. In Irish it's Ó Cnáimhsí which literally, as far as I can see, means Boner...ie someone who bones

So when people call me Boner (which has been my nickname for awhile now), it is actually a testament to my goalkeeping ability (or its ironic due to my lack of goalkeeping ability)?
