FAO Pats fans (and anoraks): Derek O’Connor

    Hows it going…

I’m looking for info on goalkeeper Derek O’Connor. I think Dolan signed him for Pats in 2000. Just wondering did he play much for Pats, and where and when he moved on? Does anyone where he’s playing now, if he is at all?

    Cheers
    Sean

Didn't play once for us. Not sure where he ended up tbh. I'll root out a few programmes from that time later (if I remember )

He was the keeper for the Ireland U20's in the World Youth Cup in '97 in Malaysia if my memory serves me well.

Don't think he ever made an appearance for Pats though.

He was with Huddersfield and then went to Frickley Town before coming to Pats but as said never played for them. Do not think he is with a team after Pats.

Cheers... yes he was keeper in Malaysia 97. Was with Huddersfield at the time (1 or 2 appearances for them) then Frickley and Bradford PA, and signed for Pats in 2000. Not much news of him after that.

Make a banner with a picture of him and put it on the Shopping centre end in Dalymount. He should turn up.

I think he had a spell with Finn Harps .... but I'm not 100% sure about this.

You're probably thinking of James Gallagher, who went from our reserves to them (fine keeper BTW)

I think he may have played a friendly (and if it's the same guy not even a proper friendly, just one of them goodwill pitch opening ones totally out of season) for us or was linked with a move, but nothing ever came of it.

Well, it made me giggle .

As for Derek O'Connor, he grew up across the road from me. As far as I know he went back to England after leaving Pats because he couldn't settle back in Ireland. He was talking about playing non league over there I think, but I don't know if he ever did.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Bit in the herald today about that 1997 "malaysian marvels" team.

Said O'Connor works as a landscape gardner in the Huddersfield area
