A genuinely funny "Dumb Ass " who always gave his all!!
Good luck Jason!
Jason McAteer has announced his retirement.
McAteer became a free agent at the end of last season when League One side Tranmere Rovers opted not to renew his deal as player/coach at Prenton Park.
And he has decided to hang up his boots after a 16-year playing career.
People can say what they like about him but I am sure none of us will ever forget his goal againist Holland at Lansdowne .
A genuinely funny "Dumb Ass " who always gave his all!!
Good luck Jason!
best of luck to him , he had some great games in green and gave us a few good memories!
Was he crazy!! Yeah , in a very special way , an Irishman.
I slept, and dreamed that life was Beauty;
I woke, and found that life was Duty.
Goals against Holland (Home and Away) and the Flying Kick against the Mysterious Macedonians....................
Quoting years at random since 1975
Have to respect the man for winning our first World Cup.
Best of luck.
Incidentally, I thought he might have been the type who'd enjoy a final year or two in the eL (on the **** in Dublin, but sure how bad).
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

Am looking for old Irish matches on VHS, PM me if you have some and I'll upload them here
Thanks for the memories Jason.
Fair play Triggs.
" I wish to God that someone would be able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again: "Why do they come to me to die?"
I thought he was very decent central midfielder when he first came to prominence with Bolton. How did he end up on the right side?
He had some (naive?) guts winding Keano up silly.
Cheers Jason, I'll always remember you goal in the Holland game.
Great servant for Ireland. That goal V Holland was one of the most important goals ever scored by any Irish player
He was also excellent when he came on against the Mexicans in '94, unlucky not to score and provided the cross for Aldridge's consolation.
Not the sharpest tool in the box though
That Head & Shoulders advert he did was shamefull.
Enjoyed the goal against Holland though...

Legend.
What a game, that Holland one. Never saw the goal with everyone standing up in front of me - just heard the cheer. Still can.
His enthusiasm was infectious. I think he played it up a bit though. Met his old man in the Central Hotel after agame once and had a few beers. Good crack.
I was in the best place to watch that match.
slane.

that sounds remarkably like something an Irish soldier might say...
agree about him being destroyed by Liverpool (though his crossing was excellent). He was the rising star of central midfield when he played for Bolton before declaring for us. I used to hope that Charlton or McCarthy would play him in centre mid. I think McCarthy might have tried him there in a friendly - i cant remember who it was against. I think he may have come on as a sub... anyway, he played really well and gave a killer pass for a goal. Anyone remember that or have i smoked too much?
legend! scored 2 of the most important (and best) goals I can remember for us...provided some great entertainment on the way (karate kick against Macedonia) and seemed to genuinely care about playing for us....would agree about Liverpool being his downfall, thought he would have been quite a handy CM for us...
Is it true about the coaching badges thing? Surely then, given that he's reserve team coach for the mighty Tranmere he must be more qualified than Stan???
MCATEER FOR IRELAND!!![]()
