Pineapple, you're making the mistake of trying to debate with the 'my club is better than your club therefore I'm better than you' argument. You know what people say about holding a debate on the internet.
For the record, I don't like squad numbering, probably only because I'm used to the traditional system and UCDD uses squad numbering for all gear except the match day kit.

Look this is the way things happen since cable sports channels arrived. People see that proper foreign professional players have names on their back & squad numbers. When they see local football they associate 1 to 11 with amateurness.
Like it or not squad numbers are here to stay & I think of no advantage to clubs in having numbers 1 to 11. 1-11 probably means need more jerseys as need long and short sleeve versions, small medium & large for maybe 3 different stripes as players not all the same size.
The advantage you cite, saving a few bob on buying kit, is not a major one. Some clubs use squad numbers and some don't, each have their own reasons.
I don't accept the argument that professionals use them and amateurs don't. Our international soccer and rugby teams use numbers 1-11 (or 1-22) as do our other professional rugby sides.
Assume squad of 20 players & only home and away jerseys.
- Club with squad numbers & 2 different jerseys needs 2*20=40 jerseys in total.
- No squad numbers means 11*2(different jerseys)*3(sizes)=66 jerseys.
Names on jerseys help new fans to identify players as many people see foreign football on tv first.
Y'know some time way back in the mists of time, some Luddites held out against the introduction of just numbers onto players' shirts? Welcome to Groundhog Day, LoI-style.![]()
Revenge for 2002
Pete, I don't buy the small/medium/large arguement - the fat guy is always no.6. Simple really.
Seriously, 20 is a very tidy squad size, and you're not allowing for any transfers.
Look, I'm not digging-my-heels-in dead against it, but at this moment in time there are a lot of clubs running on a shoe string, and this is a luxury they can't afford.
Now we're all made well aware of the 'professionalism' of CC, as I'm sure Peadar mentioned it in the midst of his inane posts, so they're welcome to squad numbering, but I don't see why it should be forced on the rest of the league.

it should be a requirment of the new premier league that each player should have to wear name and number, no buts. it looks professional, and makes players more marketable and easier to pickout/associate with for the casual fan. then of course thers the revenue generated from printing
1-11 is grand for the 1st
Would this argument carry, if I obtained a squad number from 1-11 depending on my position, I would see this as being recognised as the first choice selection for the position I was aspiring to. If given a number beyond 12 I would feel that I was not recognised as the preffered choice - a bit player. Sadly the days have gone when a team that had few rotations won leagues. Was'nt 1 of Liverpool's Championships in 70's won with only using 13/14 players throughout. Think of Revie's Leeds team (if any of the older ones on here can) of late 60's early 70's everyone wether fan or not would know players 1-11 (you'll all know who no. 10 was !), same with Chelsea same era, and man utd. Changes and trend's happen in sport, but sometime's a mix of old and new is not a bad thing. Have squad numbers, but 1-11 given to the intended first xi at start of season 12 and beyond to fringe. Thus recognised as preferred choice you will perform to keep shirt, shirt 12 and over I want a no 1-11 next time thus when chance given I'm playing my gut's out. One thing for certain I dont want to see an outfield player getting squad No. 1.
Were Pats breaking SSC rules tonight by not having all their squad with names?
Noticed; Ryan, Brennan, Mulcahy, McGuire and Foley all without them.
If your gonna do it, do it right or not at all.
The other night against Bray City had to wear last season's black away with Beamish covering Nissan as O'Neills haven't delivered the new one yet. As well the names were blacked out and some players had to wear different squad numbers to usual, Kearney (20, normally 30), Kelly (28, normally 24) and Horgan (22, normally 2)
Some people might say that 's a bit "unprofessional".
