That match showed the importance of doing the basics well...

Ireland mostly did, Bangladesh mostly didn't, and what looked to be a fairly even contest turned into a very comfortable win.

How bad was the Bangladeshi fielding? They missed about 4 simple runouts and gifted us god knows how many runs.

If I see any of the Ireland batsmen attempting a reverse sweep or any other such guff against Sri Lanka, I'll go over ther and smack him one...

I'm not sure where this notion that Ireland have attained permanent ODI status came from. The conferral of ODI status upon non-Test nations was abolished a few years ago. Ireland will appear in the full ODI rankings but their ODI status expires in 2009, along with that of all Associate qualifiers. They can regain it by qualifying for the next World Cup. Only two ODIs against Test nations are scheduled for the next year or so; a tri-series involving Ireland (hosts), the Netherlands and the West Indies this summer, and a single ODI against England in July 2008.

Don't think so, to be honest. I reckon what's happening with the cricket - and this thread is a good snap shot - is the typical Irish bandwagon jumping. Once the cricket is over, people will revert to apathy. Similar to Shels v Depor not really having any effect on the eL.

It's the full ranking is the big step though, which the other qualifiers don't have. In theory, this should hopefully make it more attractive for nations touring England to play us

We should be in a better position geographically/economically than Zimbabwe or Kenya to take advantage of this. ICC may want to help us out by facilitating extra matches/funding due to the big spotlight on Ireland after the World Cup.

An Associate can be promoted when it has played at least ten one-day internationals and has beaten two Full Members, or has defeated one Full Member and won more than 60% of its games against other Associates.

Does this mean that if Ireland acheives this before 2009 we can roll our full-ODI status forward by another 2 years?

I don't think it makes any material difference at all. Ireland are eligible for this notional championship and will feature on official ranking lists, that's about it. Kenya were granted full ODI status after the 2003 World Cup (before the rules were changed) and couldn't get a game for years afterwards. The Future Tours Programme is set in stone until about 2012, so any future ODIs against Test nations will probably be on an ad hoc basis.

I knew Ireland were in the WC & because its on Sky Sports did plan to watch it. I must admit my interest dropped when they started getting trashed as not much fun to watch.

I would have watched some of the Ashes to see England lose & more interest when Joyce started eventhough hes a judas.

My brother is living in the UK & i think he caught the Ashes bug a few years ago & he would have actively followed the Ireland games both live in the pub & on the BBC website. Was playing cricket on the beach at the Easter weekend & must say was getting some interested looks - damn that bowling is harder than it looks.

That's a bit cynical, appropriate bandwagging has it's place

CRC referred to effect in proportion.
AFAIA, the Irish cricket set up got about $1/2m to prepare for this WC. The success so far will bring in extra cash. At a minimum the WC exploits are an unforgettable reward for the efforts of the team etc. I'd assume the cricket board will be able to use the cash generated and publicity to support their future plans.
It's just that I can't see how this team will be able to stay together with defecting being accepted as a normal career move and other players getting tied up with pro contracts.

I've been practising in the garden for years slinging snowballs at an electicity pole about 15m away, at best (with a low wind factor) I might have a 50% bulls eye hit rate. That's just trying to hit the target.

Aussies looking unstoppable - 7 wicket win, 7+ overs in hand.

Disappointingly, SL rested their big guns - making a farce of one of the potentially most exciting Super 8 games. Was hoping they'd be rested against us, their bowlers could destroy us. Maybe they still will although they will be determined not to finish 4th and avoid Aus until the final.

reading ger siggins world cup diary on theicu.org he listed some of the groups that sent their congratulations to the irish team
