Does anyone else think Malinga's bowling action is a bit odd? It's barely overarm most of the time.
We're not arrogant, we're just better.

He's been credited in some quarters with reviving the roundarm style of bowling which was current in the 19th century.

Was just watching that over lunch today and it did seem very like throwing rather than bowling. Not sure how he was getting away with it.

It's a VERY odd action, but as long as his arm is straight, it's legal.

Very impressive but at the same time, why doesn't everyone else do it?
City definetly have the best bands playing at half-time.

Wasn't the explanation for Murali's unusual bowling action some sort of abnormality or defect in his arm that either prevented him bowling in a more orthodox way or allowed him to bowl in a way most people couldn't

    Possibly something similar here.

speaking of 19th century here's a piece in today's times on the prevalence of cricket in kilkenny back then.

I think that the way all the Sri Lankan bowlers bowl is different from the usual way, does it really matter how you throw a ball, I remember playing in school and the coach said that 3 fingers had to cover the ball and had to be an overarm throw.

Takes a bit of getting used to again going by Smith and Kallis' reactions after he bowled his first ball at them.

and it's not gonna be three
and it's not gonna be four
it's more likely to be 5-1.

Because its much harder to control the direction than if you have the arm vertical. Most people would be spraying wides all over the place.

Probably a lot easier to control length though, that's what I found hardest when I bowled. I used to do a lot of unintentional full tosses at head height, my only chance of getting a batsman out was to hit him on the head and hospitalise him
I would say it is easier to control both line and length using his method.

In a game against New Zealand earlier this year, the umpires had to take off their ties because the balls were being delivered from in front of their ties and were distracting the batsmen

Russell Court Hotel today is the place to watch the game for any cricket fans.

    "Unintentional" Yeah sure...

My arm tends to drift just a little bit away from vertical, and the directoion goes awry very quickly when that happens. Length usually isn't as big an issue for me. Horses for courses, I guess.

Looks like Ireland are going to field their regular first choice XI against England today, with Johnston returning after injury. Porterfield is a lucky man to retain his place after scores of 0, 13 and 0. He can probably thank his performances in Kenya for his continued participation. I'm surprised Kenny Carroll hasn't been given a chance, as a left-hander/right-hander opening combination can often disrupt a bowler's rhythm (plus his chinaman bowling could be useful on a pitch which might take spin.)

Caroll was only played a few serious games for Ireland, could have been risky.

Only 25 Mins to go now, We are fielding first.

Good stuff. Vaughan chose to bat. Our chance of victory batting first would have been less than 3%. Bopara retains his place for England ahead of part-time spinner Dalrymple, which is an interesting selection in the circumstances.
