reckon the new Blackburn owners have someone high profile already lined up (Jol?) to take over. Makes more sense with the transfer window about to open, the new manager can immediately set about building a squad

Allardyce's approach to football is quite agricultural, big blokes only and long balls forward. Hughton tends to be a bit more creative and if he took over maybe the likes of Doran might get a look in as presently due to his size and his position as a winger, he has not been given a chance.

Considering hes not that long out of the Irish set up and would know a few of the Irish lads reasonably well, id like to see him draft in a few of our lads to whatever club he heads to next. We can do with another supporter of Irish talent ala McCarthy and Keane.

the more i think of it, the more unsure i am that the new Indian owners of Blackburn Rovers were looking at a name like Hughton's to lead Rovers forward. In fact, does anyone else feel that Hughton might be caught in a strange position that despite what he has done with Newcastle, he has not yet really proved himself over a long time and, as such, a lot of the better teams in the Premiership wouldnt risk taking a punt on him yet? I think the Ireland managers position would be ideal for him.

Possibly, but the job won't be available for a year at least. The FAI are not going to sack Trapattoni, to avoid paying off his contract.

i know that. I just stated that at this stage of his career, the Irish job would be ideal for him.

International football is 'usually' a job for the highly experienced I would say. Wouldn't a job in the championship be better for his career at this stage if he cannot secure a premiership job.

its just my opinion. I think Mick McCarthy made the switch to the Irish job with a similar level and length of management/coaching experience. He did very well in the job and he subsequently did very well because of that.

True, Milwall was his only management job pre Ireland (4 years per Wiki) which suggests he had a little more experience than Chris has at present in management (Though Chris would have far more coaching experience at this stage than Mick did, I guess). Mick took 3 campaigns before he qualified for a tournament. If Trap, leaves at this end of this contract without qualifying for EURO12 - Im not sure I could cope without out us qualifying for a tournament for another 2 or 3 campaigns with a relatively rookie manager.

I do hope he picks up a good club job though and builds on his good experience gained to date.

was it 3 campaigns before he qualified? Im surprised by that. Thinking about it though, i suppose he qualified on his third campaign. WC98, Euro2000 and then got to WC02.

Anyway, the main point of my original post was not that he should be the next Irish manager, just that that i think Chris is caught in a strange sort of no-mans land and that i would be surprised if a premiership club took a punt on him. Its not through any fault of his, just circumstances more than anything. And i could very easily and quickly be proven wrong.

He's basically in the same position as Roy Keane was when he walked out on Sunderland. The only difference between Hughton and Keane is obviously Keane had a hugely distinctive playing career which makes him a big name, even if he hasn't achieved a whole lot in football management. The second time around is a lot harder, especially as Chris would already have known all the players he was working with in Newcastle having been a coach there before-hand.

I rate him and think he looks like he could be a solid manager, I would have to agree with Stu though — I'd be surprised to see a Premier League team take a punt on him right now. A championship side looks a lot more likely, and I hope he manages to land a job there and do a great job again. I would prefer to see him at West Ham / Blackburn / any other Premier League vacancy but I think I'll have to keep dreaming.

We will fail to qualify for Euro 2012 and Hughton will get the Ireland job after that.

I cant find the quote anywhere, but I remember during one of Hughtons caretakers stints at tottenham him saying that he was a coach and not a manager and what he enjoyed doing and wanted to do was coach players.

It was a while ago and his success at Newcastle may have changed his mind but I wouldnt be surprised if he started coaching again.

I thought I remembered him saying that myself so I took a look around to see if I could find the quote. I found an article from 2003 while he was assisting David Pleat (who was caretaker of Spurs after Glenn Hoddle got sacked) where he said the following:

"At some stage I want to be a manager in my own right but at this moment in time I want to be first-team coach here and assistant manager with the Republic."

I guess he has had designs on becoming a manager for a while after all.

I mentioned this already, but for me a team like Wigan would be ideal for Hughton. Whelan appointed Martinez from the Championship and he has been given scope to build his own team, albeit not a great one. Hughton has proved himself good at picking up an okay team and building a competitive unit. The players at Wigan remind me a bit of Newcastle some developing youngsters and an international contingent. I think too that Whelan unlike Ashley is loyal to his manager. Therefore, Martinez will probably last at least until the end of the season and a review will occur then.
