Not that it affects the general principle, but I wouldn't be so bothered about him missing this match. Ireland should beat this transitional/experimental Bermudan side with ease, although three of their more promising bowlers (Malachi Jones, Stefan Kelly and Rodney Trott) should arrive from the Americas U19 tournament before the game.

I very much doubt we're going to get a completed game in, anyway. The Antalis Leinster Senior Cup final between Clontarf and Merrion is scheduled for tomorrow at Rathmines. Can't see that surviving the weather either.

It does not make a difference for me, if Ireland were playing Australia or some new nation like the Falkland Islands, he should always be prepared to play for Ireland at all times.

The county players do. Some of the Irish-based players are paid for coaching by their clubs.

If they don't get paid when playing for Ireland then there is nothing to question about some players not being able to turn up for games.

If it's only his club paying his wages then wouldn't he be obliged to play for them when needs are greater.

Clontarf won the Antalis Leinster Senior Cup after beating Merrion by 126 runs in the final. Rod Hokin was the stand-out performer, scoring 116* out of Clontarf's total of 253/8. He then took 3-21 as Merrion collapsed to 127 all out.

The last game of the international season gets underway at Clontarf in about ten minutes (start delayed due to rain.) Ireland are facing Bermuda in a four-day Intercontinental Cup match and will expect to win handsomely. Bermuda's bowling unit (which suffered plenty of punishment in the recent series against the Netherlands) has been augmented by several members of their victorious Americas U19 World Cup qualifying squad, however.

Bermuda won the toss and opted to field under cloudy skies. The Ireland team is as follows: Porterfield, White, Botha, N O'Brien+, K O'Brien, Cusack, Johnston, McCallan, Fourie, Thompson, Langford-Smith.

Ireland declared on 524-8 early in the afternoon session on day two. Porterfield scored 166, Kevin O'Brien an unusually restrained 50 and Trent Johnston 61.

Rather impressively, Bermuda's Edness kept wicket for 133 overs and only conceded one bye. He didn't have much luck with the bat, however, as he was first man out in Bermuda's innings (caught McCallan bowled Langford-Smith for 8.)

Bermuda are currently 28-1.

Bermuda ended the day on 180-8. A spirited stand of 64 for the second wicket between Outerbridge and Cann gave Bermuda a useful start, but once it was broken, wickets fell at regular intervals. Thinus Fourie was the only Irish bowler to disappoint; he took the new ball and leaked 44 off seven overs. McCallan returned the remarkable analysis of 16-11-14-1. Langford-Smith took 2-40, Johnston 1-14, Thompson 2-36, White 2-9 and Kevin O'Brien 0-17.

Ireland should wrap up an innings victory tomorrow, provided the weather holds.
