Is it completely beyond the realm of possibility that Jose Mourinho could be approached? Do we have to this melancholic view of who we can attract? I think it would be a good move on the part of the FAI to show us that they haven't lost all ambition whatsoever. Whats the worst he can say? No? No shame there in my opinion.

When Scotland got Berti Vogts he was a top manager with one of the best records in world football.

Russia got Guus Hiddink. What pedigree have they got since fall of USSR? Have barely qualified to major tournaments and when they have gotten there did sweet fa.

What about that German bloke who won EURO 2004 with Greece? Is he dead/ gainfully employed?

i'm sure quite, in his meditterranean villa, and not in malahide bucketing down with rain. he'll be keeping his trousers far away from the ring i'd think.

    finland:
    1 Poland 12 24
    2 Portugal 12 23
    3 Serbia 12 20
    4 Finland 12 20
    5 Belgium 12 15
    6 Armenia 10 9
    7 Kazakhstan 12 7
    8 Azerbaijan 10 5

H to Azerbaijan and away to Portugal. Win those two, and barring the absolute most unfortunate series of results (aka Portugal, Finland and Serbia all finish on 26) and they qualify. I know I'd have been happy having it in our own hands with two games to go. Plus, of course, Finland never qualify for anything, probably won't this time, I'd imagine Hodgson's contract is about to expire and he might be interested in moving back closer to England.

I'd have him over Prince Philip's Trousers any day of the week.

This is the same man who is a managerial legend at Rangers and Galatasary, has won 3 Scottish Leagues, 3 Scottish League Cups, a English FA Cup, an English League Cup, and got Balckburn promoted back to the Premier and helped set the foundations for their continued survival? Yeah what a waste of space he's been as a manager

Co Adriaanse has come from nowhere to fourth favourite at 14-1 with Paddy Power.

Yeah I checked this out his contract expires after the qualifiers and I dont think they will qualify but have they ever qualified and they were they were on a really bad run of qualifications until he took over. They were nearly finishing bottom of the groups and they were down to fifth seeds.

I can only name 4 players Hyppia,Forssell and Tanio and Nemi. Now that says as much about my ignorance of Finnish football but it does show that they dont have world class players or even top international players.

I would say that there is very little money in the market at the moment so if you put 100 Euro on a guy it probably has a huge effect on the odds.

For me, Roy Hodgson has to be the priority, he has done great jobs at previous national teams and has the experience needed, if he was offered it, I think he would take it.

If not him, the manager chosen should be just out of management, not someone who has spent the last 2 years away cause they need some time to back in the routine and that could affect performances and you can not risk that.

EDIT: Seeing the Poll, and to see Liam Brady with that votes, many of you complained that Stan had no experience of management an should not be chosen, well, Brady falls into that category, he has no experience of management, only at youth levels at Arsenal which is not international management.

Co Adriaanse would be another good candidate for the job. However, with a lot of the foreign managers being touted there are two problems: 1 Do they want it? 2. Can they speak English?
Whilst I think he would be a decent manager for us we could probably find someone with a similar record to him who has managed at international level.

I think you can presume a Dutch guy can speak English. They shoot people in Holland if they cannot speak English.

The same Graeme Souness that Rovers fans were delighted to see the back of? 'Managerial legend'? give over ffs!

I see you left out the mess that was his time at Liverpool, his fantastic reign at Benfica and his disaster that was Newcastle. 'This is the best squad of players I've worked with' he said in his first couple of months in charge there. Fair play to him, he tore that squad to shreds.

Oh, and what about Southampton, where he did fcuk all and managed to get spoofed by 'Weahs cousin'?

Fired after 4 months at Torino. Flopped fantastically at Benfica.

He was bankrolled at Rangers, thats common knowledge. He is a poor man manager, he is tactically inept and even more pig headed than Stan.

    Souness for Ireland?

He managed Celtic for a while. Maybe not very successfully, but he did manage them. He'd be a great under-21 manager, not blinded by results but with an eye on the big picture of player development, which by all accounts is missing from a lot of solely results orientated youth football development.
