This building for the future line is absolute nonsense and shows that Staunton doesn't have a clue (as if there was any doubt). You don't build for the future in international football - there are no academies or young players to be bought, you make do with what you have. How does Staunton know we'll be any better off in 4 years? He doesn't even know Andy Reid plays for Spurs ffs. Hopefully he'll be gone by that time anyway. With this man in charge we've no hope of qualifying if that's his line and for the future too with all our best players gone and our poorer seeding resulting in us getting much tougher qualifying groups.

    Angry

    Crazy baffling nonsence.

Once again I feel cheated by the FAI and the Republic of Ireland Team. Part of building for the future is giving developing players within a squad a fair crack at qualifying for major tournaments. From where Im sitting, it looks like RTE in the mid 90s - its a eurovision contest that we dont want to host so lets plot to lose it. The FAI are doing everything in their power to ensure we dont qualify.

In recent years, I felt that the team(with the exception of Given), cheated Kerr and the fans with their lack lustre, non commital performances on the pitch. This virus has spread outwards now into management structure. Staunton is no more than a puppet and Delaney is the puppet master.

All the while, mugs like me pay for tickets, take days off work, drive home until 2am after games. I will go on supporting the team as I am a proud Irishman but I now firmly believe that we are witnesses in a well executed plan to destroy international football in Ireland. The reason why - thats for another day.

Carsley - Cut your ties now.

Your typo aside, I don't think it's actually Staunton that sends the faxes!

Just trying to work out who is in the squad now. From the orginal squad S Reid, Kavanagh and Elliot (?) have pulled out and Quinn has been called up. Also, A Reid is only there for the Czech game. Is this right.

Yes, I think. But not sure if Elliott is definitely gone yet.

I thought Elliott was seriously crocked last week?! Christ if they (FAI) are worried they are losing money on the plane ticket from Durham airport then let em give it to Murphy.....

I'd find it incredible if they didn't. One report I read says they're taking 22 players. If he's building for 2010 why not bring along a 23rd?

I doubt Elliott will be fit for Cyprus and is probably 25/75 for the Czechs. Staunton will most likely take him along regardless because he is very stubborn and cannot admit being wrong, for example by picking him when hes hurt

One Anto Reid of the Kimmage over 40's league has just been called into the squad. He stated he was OTM on receiving a fax from the FAI at his Sundrive road off licence. Reid has already stated he will not let anybody down and hopes to be part of Stans plans for the 2024 World Cup!

Everton midfielder Lee Carsley hopes to win a return to the Republic of Ireland setup after clarifying his availability with Steve Staunton.

Carsley came out of international retirement last month after quitting in 2004 to concentrate on his club career and family commitments.

The 32-year-old missed out on a place in the squad for upcoming Euro 2008 qualifiers against Cyprus and Czech Republic.

Carsley was disappointed to be left out of Staunton's latest squad but has since spoken with the Republic boss to clear up the confusion surrounding his availability.

The former Coventry midfielder has previously been capped 29 times by his country but is hoping to get the chance to extend that number when Staunton announces future squads.

"I have spoken with him now," Carsley told EvertonTV. "We got our wires crossed because he thought I wanted to do something else.

"I have had a chat now and it is all sorted.

"Hopefully when the next squad is announced I will be involved."

well that is brilliant news. The next squad announcement does not include the Czech game!!! I also didn't know Foley from Luton was on stand by. What is Stan's problem with regards to the captain of Leicester?

Why doesn't he get Carsley in the squad for the next 2 games? The squad doesn't fly out until Wednesday so there's plenty of time for him to meet up with the players. He's hardly needed to play the 2 games against San Marino.

So Lee is misunderstood, no explanation of what Lee was supposed to have wanted or how Staunton took on board that particular crossed wire.
I wouldn't have thought that there were so many wires in either heads in order to have a crossing. Lee didn't expand on why or what wires were involved or clear up any confusion over his initial decision to retire or on the rumours that he wanted a starting place.
Many are jumping to conclusions that Stan is at fault.
There's one big criteria for judging Stan and that's how the team performs on the pitch. No amount of expertise in media communication, interrogations (interviews), dress code, hair style or elocution can disguise that.

Seleted the strongest panel to fill that team also plays a big part in that judgement.

Sure, it's results that count but having people on your side is a big help to deflect criticism when things go wrong on the pitch. That's when good communication & avoiding gaffes like the McCarthy vs Doherty comparison come to your aid.
