alan quinn is a good callup, seeing as we're lacking in centre-midfield, to put things lightly.

i agree though that stan's comments since his appointment about building for 2010 are worrying. duff, dunne, given, finnan and keane - our best players by far - will all be in their 30s then. 2008 is really our last chance saloon with this group of players...

The stupidest part about this is that he might not even be around for 2010 if he doesnt step it up

I still think of Alan Quinn with a player of potential but I didn't realise he was 27. A decent player but not what we need. We've plenty of supporting midfielders of Quinn's ability. We need Carsley.

Very strange call up. Nothing against Quinn but Carsley is playing better. And at 27 is this the future? Stans making it up as he goes along. His comments about dropping Keane if necessary and that nobody is safe sounds great in theory. But could easily backfire. Why does he need to go public with those type of comments a week before a crucial away game? He is like the madwomans ****e all over the place.

He's obviously not going to call up Carsley. He's on record as saying he's planning for 2010 first and foremost.

For the record, if people are starting to demand Carsley in an Irish squad, we've fallen further than I realised

Just shows how desperate we are if Carsley's our saviour....

I don't want to be critical of Alan Quinn's call-up but surely McPhail is the player most deserving of a call-up if Carsley is going to be ignored.

    Hardly inspiring...

Reid's Ireland recall sent to former club

Andy Reid must wonder how closely his career is being followed within the Football Association of Ireland after learning that the notice recalling him to the national squad last week was sent to his former club Tottenham Hotspur.
He joined Charlton this summer but the FAI sent his call-up notice along with Robbie Keane's to Spurs, who passed it to his current employers. Ireland play qualifiers in Cyprus on Saturday and against the Czech Republic in Dublin four days later but Reid will miss the first to work on his fitness in London after a hamstring injury from which he returned at the weekend.

(edit: just noticed kenforee pointing this out first!)

Nobody is saying Carsley is the saviour. Equally, I think nobody can argue that actually playing an experienced central midfielder in central midfield isn't preferable to the defender/winger combo that didn't work in Stuttgart. That's all.

Quinn vs McPhail? Value judgment that the manager is entitled to make. I've always been a big fan of Quinn - it's on the record here dozens of times.

Quinn & McPhail are very different in style. One is industrious, busy & mobile while the other is more sedantary & elegant. In my opinion there's room for both but I'd say that Stephen Ireland is keeping McPhail from the squad, not Alan Quinn.

Does anyone know if Staunton is actually utilising the full squad? It appears to me that there've been more pull outs than additions. If so, this is bizarre. Why not bring Daryl Murphy along instead of Elliott, as an example? Purely for experience.

Remind me of the average ages of this year's World Cup finalists? Did any younger teams do well in WC06? I'd be worried if they were all 34+ but early 30s plus 4 or 5 lads in their mid 20s is probably the best recipe.

Of course he's not our saviour but he could be the difference between qualification or not considering the only other options in the squad for his position are O'Shea and Douglas. He's much better than both imo.

this should be a thread in itself .. just in case anyone missed this. A new level of buffoonry has been reached. A ten year old with a passing interest in football could tell you who Andy Reid plays for.

Building for the future is fine, but you have to win games in the meantime. Carsley should be in - no two ways about it
