European football has never really been his strong point overall. Aside from that one year at Shels.
Upwards to the vanguard where the pressure is too high.

    Foot.ie! Stats for Nerds IV

Some more completely irrelevant stats after this weeks final European adventure.

    Dundalk
Wednesday's game was Dundalk's 50th appearance (W10-D9-L31) in European competition.
Ended a run of 12 consecutive games conceding at HOME.
3rd time that they drew 0-0, last time was against FC Porto [POR] in 1980, the other game was v Celtic [SCO] in 1979. They have never drawn 0-0 AWAY.
Now gone 2 HOME games without scoring.
Dundalk have still only won just 1 match at HOME in the European Cup/UEFA Champions League. (v Paola Hibernians [MAL] in 1979)

    Shamrock Rovers
Its the 5th time that Rovers have lost 2-1, it has happened 4 times AWAY and once at HOME. Also the 37th time that they have conceded at least 2 goals, 21st time AWAY.
Thursday's goal was their 60th goal in Europe.
Rovers have now scored in 6 of their last 7 AWAY games. But have conceded 13 goals in the process.
Last time that Rovers lost both legs of a knockout tie was in 2011 when they played København [DEN].
They have only won just the 1 match in their last 9 games.
Rovers' AWAY record (W2-D1-L5) in Europa League is better than their HOME record (W1-D2-L5).

    UCD
After Thursday's loss, UCD lost their unbeaten record at HOME in Europe, which totaled 3 games.
Now gone 3 games in a row with a defeat, their worst ever run. Including the first time they have lost both legs in a knockout tie.

    Other
As a result of Dundalk's draw on Wednesday, a new unwanted record did not occur in the most consecutive defeats in a single season, it was at 6 matches before kickoff and 7 would have been a new record.
LOI sides this season achieved just 2 wins, last time this happened was in the 2012/13 season although they achieved 0 wins in 2013/14 season.
Also LOI sides lost 9 times this season, last time they lost 9 knockout ties was in 2003/04 season. 8 knockout games were lost in 2011/12 season, not including Shamrock Rovers 6 losses in the group stage that season.
Last 22 games for LOI sides: W4-D4-L14 F18-A40

I may eat my own words one day but I dont think Fenlon will work out at Rovers in the long term as fans get tired of his negative style and early exits in Europe against beatable teams. He really does struggle to get to grips with the European game. Damage limitation is his first thoughts it seems and goes out with a whimper. Corks negativity cost them in the end but they at least kept the tie alive in to extra time. UCD against all the Odds played ball reaped some reward and importantly gained some respect from fans of other clubs who maligned their contribution to the league. Pats just didnt seem to be bothered this season which is not like them of recent times and Buckley has had some great results in Europe in the past. There does seem to be something just out of kilter at Pats at the moment in general. Now that ive said it they'll probably go unbeaten now for the rest of the season!!

His HOME record in Europe is pretty reasonable in fairness.

A real pity to see the Maltese lose on penalties. Would have been brilliant if they'd knocked out West Ham.

Not to knock the Boss's stats results in individual games don't really matter. It's all about progressing in the tie.

    Fenlon as manager

    Lost to team from Malta
    Lost to team from Slovenia
    Beat team from Iceland
    Beat team from Croatia

    Lost to team from Spain
    Lost to team from France
    Beat team from Northern Ireland
    Lost to team from Romania
    Beat team from Lithuania
    Lost to team from Denmark
    Beat team from Wales
    Lost to team from Latvia
    Lost to team from Austria
    Lost to team from Wales
    Lost to team from Slovenia
    Beat team from Luxembourg
    Lost to team from Norway

His teams won at least one round in 5 of the ten years he's entered Europe as a manager. The defeats to Hibernians (Malta) and TNS (Wales) do make it look worse than it actually is

Went down to the UCD game yesterday, 5-1 was very harsh on them. When they got the goal back to make it 2-1 then really got on top of Slovan and had a good few chances to equalise.

Must like Pats against Legia last season, they tie was over with 10 minutes to go and tired legs let Slovan get a few goals which is a shame.

Benson is top quality by the way. Is he finishing off a degree or will he be gone at the end of the season?
    Here on a technicality.

Agree it's better than I'd have thought too but that'll drop when you add in the double defeat to Malmo for Hibs, a Scottish record 7-0 in the Easter Road game!

Other way of looking at it is he's got three bad defeats (Malta, Latvia and Wales) and only one good win (Croatia)

Everything else is pretty much as expected.

Obviously some good individual results in the defeats (draws v Depor and Lille)

But you can twist stats lots of ways.

Highlights of the UCD-Slovan game last night

Shame that, when it comes down to it, a lot of the goals were actually fairly soft. Just mental exhaustion really, cos we defended really well for the vast majority of the four games.

Even with those defeats and the lack of progression in ties, it doesn't read too bad, maybe it just shows what a low expectation level we are playing off though.
I'd say every LOI manager who has overseen a decent number of games in Europe has a few howlers on their record.

Drogheda pushing Malmo in the tie and then Malmo hammering Hibs had a bit of head scratching going on all right. Especially the 7-0 - a LoI side would ridiculed for that even if it was against Barcelona!

Ha, exactly how I saw it on first viewing. Also the manner of some of those performances from teams he put out.

Don't you worry, four higher ranked nations than yours are completely out. So no shame. Even the mighty Icelanders are done for this season. But look out, it seems like your "brother" to the north will surpass you in the standings for next years ranking. (2017) Though, not by much, so it could easily be reversed back again.
    Better luck next year nevertheless...

(Let's see if it takes 3+ days for this post to land on the forum and be buried back in the pages, like the last one i wrote)

I wouldn't have said he set his teams up negatively this year. He went with more physical players in the Norwegian games, but they're a big team of professional players so I can see the logic. The fact is they have a budget over 5x ours (insert fourth-biggest budget joke here) and are in mid-season so getting a result was always going to be very difficult.

    And so it is,
Just like you said it would be
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

Don't agree that Pats weren't bothered. We actually didn't play too badly, just not clinical enough. As for something being wrong, we're now on a run of six wins out of six since you (comfortably) beat us in Richmond.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Thats fair enough. Pats just seemed to be misfiring by Buckley's standards. As said I may regret saying anything as Pats go unbeaten now.
