Is there a solitary Welsh team to be found in any sport without at least one Davies, Jones or Williams? Aberystwyth had two Davies(es?), two Joneses and a Williams featuring in yesterday's game, with another Davies on the bench, and I see from just looking at their wider squad that they have a second Williams in the squad too.

I suppose such overload makes things a bit easier for commentators, but it's surely not a good sign for the gene pool? Squad-member Ed Powl-Jones hints at a bit of diversity at least...

As for the game itself, they sounded to be very poor. Whether or not performance and ability was related to local reproductive customs, who knows?! Patterson should have scored at least a hat-trick. Derry will be going through.

Positive stuff all-round in terms of results then. Dundalk should progress comfortably too and I'd be confident Sligo won't slip up at home against opposition who simply don't know where the goal is.

I would have expected both Derry and Dlk to progress before their games, didnt know much about Banga before, so was unsure, but obviously all 3 are now odds on.

To be fair though, it has to be said all 3 got very favourable draws getting these sides, but you still need to get past them I suppose.

Thought the IL clubs did very well too considering first competitive game, pity Glenavon conceeded those goals so late, I know their travel plans were disrupted, but even at 2-0 down it was alive, 3-0 is a killer.

Top marks of the night to Derry, smashing win.
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), only Irish club to win a game / points in Europa League Group Stage (2016).

I wouldn't be putting my life savings (small and all that it may be) on us getting through. Game is far from over. We're just as bad as they are.

You're not though. Sligo looked much more composed on the ball, held possession and territory better. Sligo just lacked creativity. You'll be strong favourites to progress.

    Question…
If our 3 EL teams qualify for next round via 3 2nd leg victories, what impact does this have on the national co-efficient?

    It depends on the results.

Club coefficients (qualifying) are now based on the round in which they exit, plus share of national coefficient.

National is based (solely??) on results.

Me neither, just look at Pats last year, they shud have easily beat that team yet messed it up. I can easily see Sligo doing the same

    It would add 0.75.

So clubs don't get much of a co-efficient rating just for winning a game anymore? Makes it more difficult to build a decent co-efficient now.

Not LOI Related but if Estonian clubs continue to get results they will overtake Wales in ranking, demoting Welsh champions to first round champions league qualifying among the bottom 6 leagues

Amazing that the Azeri champions lost in Andorra in that round.

If the Welsh end up there, they'll escape soon enough by winning the first round and gaining coefficient points.

Niall McGinn was on the mark for Aberdeen against nine-man Daugava Riga last night. Glenavon went from 0-0 after 82 minutes to 1-0 going into injury time to 3-0 overall. Nasty.

    Arguably this system is better.

It rewards regular qualification. This season Linfield were seeded (for first time?). And I'm not sure they previously progressed through two rounds

Yeah I quite prefer this system myself.. gives the clubs that actually play well in Europe a better chance on getting seeding.

There is also a benefit to a team which qualifies for the EL but haven't any coefficient credits. They can start off their EL campaign with some coefficient points due to the results of their league's representatives over the previous few seasons.

Providing that we see off Jeunesse Esch on Thursday it seems likely that Dundalk will have home advantage in the first leg match v Hajduk Split according to two local journos tweets.

    Live at Oriel @LiveatOriel · 4h

Dundalk as expected will have home advantage in the first leg of round 2 of the Europa league qualifying round if they progress on Thursday
    Gavin McLaughlin @McLaughlinGavin · 4h

@DundalkFC will have home advantage in the first leg against Hadjuk Split if they progress past Jeunesse Esch on Thursday night.
Not yet confirmed by either club it must be said.

Do you know it's Dundalk who requested to be at home first?

I believe Hajduk have asked for a fixture reversal and Dundalk have agreed.Hadjuk have a festival or something going on in their ground on the days prior to the match and they reckon their pitch wont be ready.
    Dundalk should have refused imo.

Why should we refuse them. We have a better opportunity of packing Op out for the first leg, worse case scenario would be to go over there and get trumped like levski did (BTW not that I think we will get hammered) but the priority is to sell our home games.

Two legged tie shouldn't really matter whose at home first out away first. Actually we might get them undercooked
