    RTE drop rights for EPL...

Mods feel free to move if needs be but interesting LOI related line from Ryle Nugent in the article:

    http://www.rte.ie/sport/soccer/2013/...ague-coverage/

...My strategy has been, and will continue to be, the protection of our national teams and national games programming such as GAA, Horse Racing, the Airtricity League and so on...
Lip service or will we see an actual bit of increased coverage and promotion for the LOI across the RTE platforms? Seems as they have to reduce their sports budget by 25% they'll be concentrating on domestic things across all codes/ sports as opposed to paying ridiculous money for the foreign rights.

Yes and no, less people will watch EPL highlights as its not on RTE but MOTD will be on BBC and i would guess most EPL fans in Ireland have this. It will mean RTE have a time slot to Fill on Sat nights, would they have some more coverage of LOI or GAA on Sat evenings instead. hopefully, wont change a lot either way but might help a little.

That's good to see. He didn't mention the league on the radio this morning, only "national teams and national games" which I took to mean internationals and GAA.

In fairness to RTE (not a phrase that readily springs to mind) I'm not unhappy with the amount of coverage they give the league, more the somewhat slipshod nature of it. It's quite clearly something they do with no real enthusiasm or interest. Coming on 5 minutes before kick off, no real promotion even when they're showing a game live, basic mistakes on the round up on MNS (getting players names wrong etc). Con Murphy you felt at least knew his stuff on the league, Peter Collins....well, not so much.
Out for a spell, got neglected, lay on the bench unselected.

Obviously no market for Premier League football in Ireland.

I am not sure about having LOI Games on Saturday Nights which I have seen on a few sites, viewers of the RTE's highlights will just the watch Spanish, Italian or French League games which are on at those times instead and then watch MOTD on the BBC.

Some LOI teams already play on Saturday nights. If they're going to move games for TV coverage, we should at least prefer prime time to the awkward slots they usually pick to avoid every other sport in existence.

I'd suggest showing Town every second Saturday but none of our Fickle Felims would bother showing up to the game. It's bad enough as it is.

Surely these fine football fanatics can be accommodated in some other capacity of venue. Perhaps some manner of tavern?

They obviously dropped it because they couldn't afford it, no other reason. If it means the only club football on rte now will be champions league and MNS I am fine with that.

But, will they really start showing more live games? How about using some of the money saved on English football and start giving decent and proper fees to our own clubs who are shown live?

#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), first Irish club to win points in a group stage in Europe (2016).

I really can't see them showing more games, if anything it will be less. Look at now - the rugby season is over so Friday nights are completely free, yet as far as I know there are no games announced for the forthcoming weeks and Setanta took the last fixture.

I'm happy enough with the coverage given to the League of Ireland. I'd prefer if the LoI highlights were shown during the weekend. Going by other threads on this topic though, it's hard to get consensus on that so I won't start in suggesting when it should be on! There is a good few games played on Monday nights. I don't see the point on having a highlights show on while games are being played.

    A Championship: 4 years - 8 first teams - 0 financially ruined. First Division '14: 7 first teams.
Opportunity lost for new clubs/regions to join the LoI family.

The man in the front row was also a successful referee. He's even wearing his whistle.

Heard someone say the other day that MNS was getting more viewers than Premier Soccer Saturday, how true that is I don't know, the info on the rte site is limited and skewed from the euros last year so no mention of either. Most people would watch match of the day on bbc though I'd think.

A live game a week may be a bit much to ask but every second week and more promotion and advertising the league should be done, RTE are crying out for advertising these days. Best case scenario is they slot a live game in on Saturday evenings to replace Premier Soccer Saturday and throw the home side a few quid as used to be the case with a bit of tv money coming in to the clubs. Knowing RTE though they'll put 10 year old national geographic repeats on in that slot as they used to!

    I'd wager it's exactly 0% true.

Would pay money to see what's written on those badges around their necks.

Bloke on the right looks like he's on day release.
