He has been good for us in that respect. Start with McClean and bring Hunty on for the last 20 or 30 would be my preferred option.

How could people start anyone other than McGeady and Duffer? Both are international quality players. McClean may be too, but I'd say it'll be in the WC Qualifiers that we see that.

Quite easily. They might be international quality but sometimes just a better player comes along.
So happy to see either dropped/rested/injured.

Liam Brady on RTE last night said he thought McClean was a certainty to make the Euros squad. He said he hasnt been talking to Gio but interesting view all the same.

Only those inside the inner circle can call him Gio.

That's just off the top of my head.
We;re going back a bit here. He undoubtedly had a purple patch when he first emerged as Premiership / International player and defenders were still confounded by his radically direct approach, but he's not been that effective in a long while.

    Hmmmm.....

    Disappointment

But there has also been disappointment for the affable local man, who has been capped for N. Ireland at Under-21 level.

Having performed well at that level, he felt he had a chance of a call-up to the senior squad for recent Carling Nations Cup ties which were staged at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin.

“I honestly felt that not just me, but a few of the players at Derry City would have been good enough to be called into the squad after so many senior players had dropped out.

“However, the manager opted to select players from Irish League clubs instead. Personally, I believed that Gerard Doherty, Shane and Patrick McEleney, or even myself, had a chance of getting called up as we had been playing well with Derry at the time but we were not considered.”

Would he be happy to represent N. Ireland with so many other players from the North-West area opting to represent the Republic?

“International recognition is very important to most players. I thoroughly enjoyed playing for the Under-21s and, therefore, any call-up to the senior squad would be considered an honour.

“Yes, I was disappointed that a few of our own players didn’t get called up for recent squads, but I’m not breaking my heart or anything like that.

“I just felt that with the controversy surrounding other local players who have opted for the Republic, one of us at the Brandywell may have had a squeak of getting in, but that didn’t happen.

“However, my focus is with Derry City and I can’t afford to dwell on international disappointments. I’m totally committed to my home town club and, just like the rest of the lads, I want to be involved in any success we can achieve this season.”

McClean is careful with his words regarding the IFA team. He gives what I call a diplomatic answer. Northerners can spot this straight away.
He said: "International recognition is very important to most players." when asked would he like to play for Northern Ireland around the time of the CNC. (He also mentions the McEleney brothers and Gerard Doherty, all of whom have been part of FAI squads in the past.)

When one contrasts this with his stated feelings upon getting "international recognition" for "[his] country", the aforementioned diplomacy becomes clear.

"To make my debut – be it against the Czech Republic or at another time – would be a dream come true, and that’s all I’m focused on."

So, like ifk, I'd like to know where the irony lies.
End Apartheid Now! One Team in Ireland!

Trap putting in the hours today...

There are potentially eight Republic of Ireland players in action at The Hawthorns, which is why Giovanni Trapattoni is there, I suppose. Anyway, one of them, James McClean, has missed a good chance from a Seb Larsson cross. The Baggies still lead 1-0, and are still creating chances - James Morrison just tested Simon Mignolet with a low shot.

Maybe McClean got stage fright, just got beat by Morrison with a header at the backpost for WBA's 2nd.

Sunderland seem to have got a bit of a spanking from WBA today.

    Roy Hodgson for England so.

    McClean Out!!!
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.
