These two from his Wikipedia article are pretty funny.

"And Ireland have got to contain the brothers Baggio." [Later in the game…] "The Baggio brothers, of course, are not related."

"When I said they'd scored two goals, of course I meant they'd scored one."

I think we have managed to overcome the jinx and just at the time when we have reached a compatible relationship with George, he goes and does this.
This is a reverse jinx of sorts.

After looking at that, has my signature been wrong all these years??

Perhaps the reason we couldn't muster a goal in the past two matches (which, given the circumstances, would have been a relatively major goal) was because it just wouldn't feel right without George calling it.

Probably the same reason the opposition didn't score! didn't have George giving them the commentator's curse!

If his heart problems had not already surfaced and he was there as usual sitting behind the mic, for sure we would have heard a thud, followed by dead air.

I heard him once say that he always spoke to team officials before games and clarify the pronunciation of any names he was unsure of. This simple act of professionalism meant you never heard him disrespect foreign players by fumbling over their names or referring to anybody as "the guy with the unpronounceable name"

Great commentator, he was apart of my childhood as much as chasing skirt in the playground. God speed ya George, get well soon.

Some of George's commentary is just etched into the brain. Its not going to be a profound statement and doesn't have to be. Its just the accompanyment to the excitment and emotion of an important goal that stays with you.

When you hear "Oh! Whelan!!" - you can still see Ronnie in mid-air, spectacularly volleying past the Russians in '88.

The old tendency to tempt fate during games is a torment though!!!!

    Get well soon, George.

Yeah he was the only person who persisted with the pronunciation of Jaap Stam as Jaap Shtum.

However we all remember the pronunciation mess he made of Stan Valckx in 1994...
