Not sure where to put this one really, but George Hamilton is recovering from emergency heart bypass surgery he underwent last night.

GEORGE Hamilton, the country's leading soccer commentator, was recovering in hospital last night after emergency heart bypass surgery.

The 60-year-old had complained of feeling unwell and experiencing breathing problems earlier this week.

Initially he suspected he might have been suffering from flu but he was sent to hospital on Tuesday by his GP.

Hamilton is now in the Blackrock Clinic in Dublin, where he under went several hours of emergency heart bypass surgery.

He was in a serious but stable condition last night, with his two daughters, other relatives and close friends keeping a bedside vigil.

Hadn't heard anything about this at all, although I'd been wondering why he wasn't doing the Shamrock Rovers game against Partizan Belgrade on RT� the other night. Hope he has a speedy recovery and all that.

Edit: It doesn't mention it specifically there, but apparently he suffered from a suspected heart attack on Tuesday night. That's according to the Irish Times anyway.

Good luck George and a speedy recovery. Even if you were responsible for 90% of the late equalisers against Ireland.

I will never forget being 3-1 up against Poland and George calling it a great victory and other such terms, over and over, 3-3 a few minutes later.

But anyway, I hope he comes back strong from this.

Best wishes to George, will take him months to recover, but hopefully he'll be back doing commentaries in Poland/Ukraine, if not the business end of the Champions League.

Terribly sorry to hear that - a very nice fella. I ended up sitting beside him on a flight in South Africa during the World Cup last year and he was very chatty.

I do seem to remember George, during the 2002 game with Spain, saying; 'And Connolly is coming on... well, maybe Mick McCarthy knows something that we don't!' It was on the Road to Asia DVD so I'm pretty sure that's how it went!

Anyway, best wishes to George for a speedy recovery. Ireland matches are simply not the same when he's not at the mic.

On the plus side, I reckon our chances of conceding late equalisers are reduced for the time being.
