Cork City Football Club’sUunder 19 team opened there Airtricity League Under 19 Elite Campaign with a confident 4-2 win over bray wanderers at Bishopstown stadium on Sat the27/08/2011 a nervous first ¼ of an hour saw Stuart Ashton and Paul Bowdren’s young side fall a goal behind when Bray Wanderers Ryan Coombes fired home. Upon the restart Cork City equalised when Ross McCarthy’s slide rule ball unleashed Danny Morrissey who rounded the keeper and slotted home. City increased their lead on the 28th minute as the impressive Stephen Kenny snuck in undetected to head home a Roy Collins cross. As both sides settled into the game and the nerves began to fade a decent ball game emerged, both sides seemed intent on entertaining the 200 strong crowd. City seemed to gain more confidence with every attack and on the 34th minute Andy O’Connell fed Rob Lehane on the edge of the bray box and Lehane unleashed a curling drive that nestled sweetly in the back of the Bray net. However rather than kill Bray off this spurred them into a period of dominance which culminated in Cork City Goalkeeper David Drinan pulling off a fantastic save from a Bray corner,3-1 it finished at half time.
City emerged in the 2nd half and picked up where they left off , Danny Morrissey seemed to be on the end of every pass played forward by the cork city midfield and forced save after save from the bray net minder, however as city pressed and pressed bray absorbed and countered at every opportunity. On the62nd minute bray won a free kick on the edge of the box and rattled the cross bar with a powerful drive. With the city defence napping bray grabbed a lifeline 3-2 and the game finely poised. Bray began to dominate the middle of the park and began to dictate the play with purpose, however the comeback was too little too late and on the 89th minute Stephen Kenny grabbed his second to seal the city victory, 3points in the Leesider’s bag. Speaking after the game Cork City manager Paul Bowdren was happy with his team’s performance saying “were pleased with the result it’s nice to get off to a winning start, I feel we deserved the win we possibly could have won by a bit more, for 20 minutes in the second half I felt we took our foot off the pedal a bit but I think we were deserving winners.”
