Fair point by Mahon in my opinion. There is little doubt that reverting to part time will have a negitive impact on skill/fitness levels and accordingly expectations need to reflect that. Didnt get from the article that he was suggesting Pats will not beat the Icelandic team or making excuses. In recent years Pats have probobly been the best (on a consistent basis) LOI team in Europe, a "breakthrough" (qualifying for group stage) is probobly less likely this year across the (LOI) board due in major part to reversion to part time for most.

Scroll down to Irish clubs and click on each of the clubs highlighted Year (last time they played in Euorpe) and it will give every game for that Irish club ever played in Europe minus Intertoto Cup.

No use comparing LOI results against Iceland club teams in European competition from ages ago. And not much use when the 2 best LOI sides from yesteryear (on borrowed resources), Shels and Cork, were involved. Although I do remember Shels getting hammered in Iceland before the LOI went to a Summer league
Previous hoof and run style Icelandic clubs are now strutting their stuff with the uncomfortable zeal of a newly reformed smoker and looking down their noses at more ... primitive football styles
Not that it means IBV will get through on aggregate tonight against Pats, it means that a humble footballing side with humble resources can attempt to play the ball and do well, they will lose possession in midfield through stray passes but don't change their style because they are afraid to try to play and will struggle to impose their game against (ahem) more primitive methods.
With a trip to Kazakhstan as a likely prize for winning, I don't think either club will be too put out by being left to 'concentrate on the league'.

Both leagues have suffered badly from the Bank crashes. Virtually every club sponsor went bankrupt in Iceland overnight at the end of the 2008 season and virtually every club went bankrupt because the sponsors couldn't meet their contractual commitments. But by spring 2009, every club was back up and running and the style of football and top notch youth system that gradually took root from around 2005, was carried on.

when Cork City were performing well in Europe it very much was not on borrowed resources.

we only started spending stupid money we didnt have in 2008. that year we lost 6-2 to Haka of Finland.

We got the least value for money of any time who tried to buy success

You could easily say the same for them, they have to travel to the far west of Europe.

    ouch... that is just nasty.
I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

Based on that result, i'd say tonight's score will be nil all and Pats will save some money.
