I agree those three up for the young player award are a bit unusual. McGeady had an off year, McShane got relegated and Darron Gibson was a squad player for United.

That said, who would you have up for the award?

    I would nominate:

Marc Wilson -- FA Cup finalist (yes he got relegated, but nobody would blame him for that!)
Anthony Stokes -- 21 goals in 37 games for Hibs this campaign.
Jamie McCarthy -- played a very significant role for Wigan this season.

    Spot on.

The official nominations look bizarre in comparison.

Are the player nominations not just for what they have done in an irish shirt and not for their club form though. Even at that none of the 3 young players have done anything of note in the last season
    Its really not that complicated!!!

What is the time frame that these selections are based ?

We are in August, and the titles are 'of the year'

Stokes is the only one who's officially capped, though, and he has barely been involved with the squad, and the YPOTY is supposed to honour young players involved in the senior squad.

If they had any sense they'd merge the Young Player and U-21 awards since they clearly have to scrape the barrel for nominees in the former. Would probably make too much sense for the FAI though.

I mean McShane and McGeady are both 24 and have both been playing first team football for 4-5 years. It's as ridiculous as Rooney being nominated for the English Young Player title in his eighth season at the top level.

McShane has already won the French Young Player of the Year Award for his contribution to the goal that took them to the World Cup.
