You're absolutely right and Charlie was also one of the first players to take advantage of the parentage rule to play for Ireland. I think Shay Brennan may have been the first and Charlie Gallagher was just a couple of years later.

He was a member of the 1966/1967 Celtic squad that won every competition it entered but he wasn't quite in the frame for the European Cup Final in Lisbon.

According to his wikipedia entry, he was
    From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shay_Brennan
Despite being born in Manchester, England, he played internationally for the Republic of Ireland, qualifying through his parentage, the first Irish international to qualify in this way.

Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Could scrape together some subs with Pat Daly and Davy Walsh from decades back, Keith Fahey if he gets capped and Aaron Hughes and Jamie Ward stolen from the North. That's not a bad side, barring the diabolical front two.

Wow, that is a shockingly recent team - Villa must be the most Irish Club in Britain in the past 20 years at this stage. You missed Dave O'Leary as manager, and apparently, Seamus McDonagh is a coach. Has O'Halloran played for Villa yet?

Another Villa sub could be Alfie Hale.
That question was less stupid, though you asked it in a profoundly stupid way.

Help me, Arthur Murphy, you're my only hope!

Nope, neither did Alan Lee or Wayne Henderson

What we can't do on the books? Some of the references so far have been just as tenuous. And I'd rather not think about O'Leary, thanks all the same

    Millwall

    Graham Stack (uncapped)

    Charlie Hurley
    Mick McCarthy
    Joe Haverty
    Pat Saward

    Dave Savage
    Gary Waddock
    Steven Reid
Eamon Dunphy (Millwall's most capped player !)

    Tony Cascarino
    Richard Sadlier

    Sub: John Byrne

I would have included Mark Kennedy but I don't think he got a senior cap until after he moved to Liverpool.

    Sunderland (easiest id say)

    Shay Given

    Kevin Kilbane
    Charlie Hurley
    Paul McShane
    Gary Breen

    David Healy
    Andy Reid
    Daryl Murphy

    Anthony Stokes
    Niall Quinn
    Stephen Elliott

Managed by Mick McCarthy, assisted by Roy Keane

owned by beanpole striker Niall Quinn

I like high energy football. A little bit rock and roll. Many finishes instead of waiting for the perfect one.

    Nottingham Forest-

An abundence of quality MF players but not much up front or at the back so I had to go for a 3-1-4-1-1
With one of the midfielders (lennon) protecting the back 3 and another midfielder (Reid) playing in the hole between MF and the loan striker.
Had to take 4 of the players from N.I. too.
Sheridan, McPhail and Doyle were all loan players.

    Colin Doyle

    John Thompson-Gary Fleming-Liam O'Kane

    Neil Lennon

    Stephen McPhail-Roy Keane-John Sheridan- Martin O'Neill

    Andy Reid

    David Freeman

I actually looked into this before but poor Eamon had an atrocious international record for Ireland:

    Played 23 Won 1 Drew 5 and Lost 17.

To be fair, this was still in the era when the FAI selection committee picked the team and he wasn't out there alone but it does make you think.....

    Leeds United

Con Martin (nearly said Mark Beeney, tenuous I know but was included in the World Cup 94 sticker album for some bizarre reason!)

    Gary Kelly
    Jim Beglin
    Dave O'Leary
    Ian Harte

    Liam Miller
    John Sheridan
    John Giles
    Jonathan Douglas
    Stephen McPhail

    Robbie Keane

    Subs:
    Michael Doyle
    Ken DeMange
    Paul Butler
    Alan Maybury
Caleb Folan (never played first team though)

Manager would have to be O'Leary I guess! Or am I allowed Big Jack??

Not a bad team, bit unbalanced though! Would have Folan up with Robbie had he played a first team game in place of Douglas or Miller in midfield.

    Good thread!

    Arsenal (3-4-3)

Stack (no capped goalkeeper for the Republic AFAIK)

    Devine
    O'Leary
    Mancini

    McGoldrick
    Brady
    Joe Haverty
    Dr. Kevin O'Flanagan

    Brady
    Stapleton
    Barrett

Subs: Stokes, O'Cearuill (both capped while still Arsenal players).

It seems to be a lack of goalkeepers that is keeping us back here.

I had a go at this earlier on page 1 - Jimmy Holmes and Johnny Gavin would have to get in ahead of the uncapped lads (Yeates, Turner, Fenn and Dixon).

I do remember way back in 1981 that there was a rumour that the then Spurs goalkeeper Milija Aleksic had some Irish connection but it never came to pass http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milija_Aleksic
