I refer you and Rafa Benitez to a large book called a dictionary. Look up the word FACT and the word OPINION. What you have said above is an opinion, not a fact. Yapster struggled with the same concept last week.

no an opinion would be that a kid with nigerian parents is more irish than someone born in a foreign country with irish parents. the latter is just reality.

    Again, read the dictionary.

Ok, I'm being pedantic and I know what you mean here. A generally accepted principle does not make something fact though. Rafa got caught out on this last year....

Personally I don't have any problem with the grandparents rules (anyone who qualifies to be a citizen is regarded as equally Irish in the eyes of the law). However, I do agree that we should be prioritising players who genuinely want to play for Ireland.

Fair play for having an opinion, too bad its highly ignorant, the fact is a child born to Irish parents in another country is just as Irish as any child born in Ireland, this is a right and privelege conveyed by the constitution of our country

In one of the other threads you've held Kilbane up as an example of the ideal foreign born player, yet in this thread you've had the gall to suggest that he's not really Irish at all, I wonder how he'd feel about that?

This is essentially Jingoism, why aren't the mods doing anything about it?

Please keep on the subject Irwin - have you nothing to say about Belgians or Nigerians or even Nigerians of Belgian descent?

My sarcasm meter is picking up a 10/10 reading. Some of that nonsense above is pretty ancient stuff too. Shows that Cox has had a quiet season in the prem. Indeed that was his first ever goal in the prem! Fine way to do it.

Hi Folks, I reckon the US games or a B international would be a great opportunity to look at Simon Cox, and on the topic of anglo-irish players my question is ...does anyone know if Kieran Trippier of Barnsley is eligible? My Barnsley supporting mate reckons he is, he holds underage caps for England however as Ciaran Clark proved that doesnt necessarily define where hes allegiances might lie.Regards.

Looks like he's our newest player.

On a brighter note, Simon Cox, the West Brom player who can play up front or just behind the strikers, is at an advanced stage of completing the paperwork required to declare for Ireland.

The 24 year-old, whose grandmother was born in Galway, has scored four goals this season, having made 10 starts and 11 appearances from the bench. Three of those goals, however, came in the League Cup.

If the process is successfully completed over the next two weeks then Cox is likely to join up with the squad and provide the manager with an additional option as he tries to juggle his resources over what thus far remains, pending the confirmation of a post Macedonia friendly, a three-match programme.

Meh, he's no better than Keane, Doyle, Walters, Long, etc. Always nice to have the option though if he hits form or we have an injury crisis.

A striker playing fairly regularly in the Premier League is nothing to be sniffed at in my book. Brom are safe for another season too, which is more than can be said for the clubs of Keane and Doyle.

WITH AN international call-up for the Republic of Ireland still looking like a remote prospect even a couple of months ago, West Brom’s Simon Cox has revealed he has had to cancel his holidays in order to travel to Dublin this month for the games against Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The 24-year-old, whose grandmother emigrated from Galway to England as a young woman, is hoping to make his debut after the paperwork relating to his declaration for Ireland was completed. His opportunity has come after a good spell at the Hawthorns where new manager Roy Hodgson has made Cox a first-team regular since taking over.

“I’d already booked my holidays so I’ve had to cancel one to Marbella and move one back to Dubai so I can go and play,” he says.

“But I was more than happy to do that. It was something I never thought was going to come up but the chance to play international football is not something I want to pass up. It’s a good time for me to get in and around it at this stage of my development. I see getting caps for Ireland as a proud moment and so do my family.

“My grandmother is very proud,” he added. “She moved over to England when she was young and married my grandad. All her sisters and my dad’s cousins are all still in Galway.”

Cox said last week that he had been about to look for a move to another club until Hodgson replaced Roberto Di Matteo but his future with the midlands outfit now looks a good deal brighter..

    meh championship quality player.

Annoying to see guys like this who make a handful of so-so appearances called up ahead of guys like harte and Delap who've been exceptional again this season and LB and CM are far bigger problem areas for us than our striking options.

Seems like Irish call-up policy in the past decade has always favoured mediocre guys in their early 20's over quality players 30+.
