This seems to cover the basics:

If you want to edit it, yeah, put it on the pc, but otherwise, don't bother.
Again, I presume this has been discussed before but is there any (not too technical) advice in relation to putting VHS onto DVD's? I hear that for editing purposes it's better to put them onto a PC first, unless it's just a straight conversion. I don't suppose there's just one simple cable that connects the video recorder to the PC by any chance?

You can't spell failure without FAI
If you've a good to convert few this might be worth a look.

I don't know if you saw this thread but that is basically exactly what I was doing.
Basically all you need is a VCR, a capture device, video editing software, and a DVD burner. I bought a TV Card with my computer and it came with the Composite (Red/White/Yellow) cables and used VirtualDub to edit the videos.

Thanks lads.
Worm-Yes I did see that thread alright but kind of thought there was more technical stuff involved in what you were doing. Ok so I have a VCR and I can burn DVD's on my pc so presume that's ok. I presume this VirtualDub thing can be downloaded? which leaves me just needing the TV Card I suppose.
Yeah VirtualDub is Freeware

You could buy the thing A N Mouse posted though that is more expensive than a TV Card (at least a relatively cheap one). However, if you have a Desktop and not a Laptop it is tough to install the TV Card (it involves opening up the computer). There may be cheaper USB converters out there and those would probably be easier. I do like the TV Card though because you can also watch TV on it.

A dazzle dvc 100 gives decent quality, have converted a couple of old Rovers vhs tapes to dvd using it. Its a USB capture card so you dont have to go messing taking the back of your computer or anything.
Got mine at PC World last year for 35 euros. Only works with Windows XP though, not vista.

Sound lads, I'll try that. Too much stuff to just throw out.
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.
