Free (not illegal) audio editing software?

Ive just started recording my own music and so on and i was wondering if anyone knew of any free programs thati could download that would allow me to edit and maybe ad beats and so on...
thanks in advance.

I know mac users can use Garage band...so i was just wondering if there is something similar for the pc.

I have that one...but there doesn't seem to be any drum machine type thingy....

Am I to take it you're into your whumf-whumf-whumf-whumf shannonman.

Even if not I used swear by Fruity Loops for such purposes.

Been so long since I used it mind that this may be the equivalent of recommending Ask Jeeves as a search engine but you can sequence beats and ad your own samples and real time audio over the top.

I've heard good things about this one too, not free but there is a free trial so you can at least mess around and it is relatively cheap to buy if you like it
