Green Hoop you are talking through your hat. I'll ask you again what "favours" can players or clubs do for Gerry Smyth who is a paid FAI employee and manager? Sure, clubs can attract players if they already have Junior Internationals in their squad, and give players a better chance of getting in the shop window, but NO club can guarantee any player a cap. Only Smyth can do that. And I do know the Junior Game cos I've played and managed in it for 25 years. Smyth may not be perfect but he picks the team he wants and rewards loyalty. Let him down and you are gone, but do your stuff and he will look after you and trust you, eg Flynn for 10 years and now Chalky.

    Post The pro's an con's

How or who he decides to pick for his squad is always goin to be a bone of contention.Their are always goin to be clubs and more so players who think they deserve a call up and dont get one and I think everyone will agree on that.

I for one was very dissapointed at some of the players left out but in hindsight that was wrong of me ,he has a hard job to do and their is always a flip side to the decisions/squads he makes and I'd say he knows that only to well.

But' their are big question marks as to why for instance as it was previously pointed out that teams that have had a bad or quiet season last year, have 3 or more in the squad and teams that had a great season last year, and more so playin well again this year have none.Team's that are performing week in week out and getting wins for me are the ones that deserve the the honour.

I am not nor will I ever wish to be envolved in management, but I know enough about sport to know that its the teams that are doin well, and more importantly winning are the ones that you would be better pickin your squad from,at any level.Loyalty is very important but ability is more so.If a player is playing with a winning side and standing out in his respective team/league then you have a better chance of getting him to carry that form on with the national side than a player who stands out with a poor/decent side.

thats nonsense, it has been proven that football is a late specialisation sport.this is why goal keepers can play till 40 and centre halfs till 35 because there experiance makes them better players over time.A defender will argueably be at his best in his late 20s and a goalkeeper may take till his early 30s to reach his peak

TBH I think that Town prove the maxim of the sum being greater than the individual parts. I dont think that Town possess anyone with the dedication and ability to perform consistently at that level. That being said, if M. Coady can maintain his form i'll be amazed if he does'nt get a call up within a few years.

Lets call a spade a spade

They played 3 games last season.Won 2 lost 1.If as it is said it is based on how you perform the must have done well twice and not so well once.STAY WITH ME HERE.

My point is that last year bar an ill timed game against the yanks his squad won 2 very good games.Yet its a drasticly different squad goin to Scotland.Loyalty to last seasons squad is'nt very present bar the odd few.

I can understasnd that being based futher up the country their would be more of a chance to watch say Leinster based players but, between Pike/Carrick/Grattan/WemblySalthill Devon and Villa their are only 2 players. These were most of the best sides outside Leinster last season and 4 or the Fai quater finalists.Dose'nt seem much of a reward for thier efforts dose it.

People outside the Pale gettin done over again...

Teams should be picked on form, the players on form being selected.Loyalty only works at club level, international matches are too inconsistent to reward loyalty

And as See's it said more than likely one of the "Town" lads will be illegal and get us booted out(at least Pike had the sense to leave there League of Ireland players out) :P

It makes perfest sense to have a few pike players in the team ,they will be 1st to moan and spot the illegal players that put them to shame and made the silly error of letting them in the back door.Cant beat having a few sore loosers in the team sometimes it works in your favour..

To Quote another person these 2 texts must put before and after the quote [Quote] and [./Quote] without the . its very easy really... and merryman,if a team is stupid enough to play illegal players our good friends at St.Michaels will only be too happy to inform us...

look merry man fact is your still rantin on about the cup ye won by default!!! Anyone wonder every club in the country hates pike!! As for town being better than the sum of there parts i'm not sure, goalkeeper fitter than ever, consistent and playing well bar sundays mix up, coady could be top class, guy in the middell of the field a really superb player find of the season in the league so far, and moroney is surely good enough for a re-call, he did after all score 2 in his last game for the international squad and never got called again, The team can't be consistently present in MJC semi's and finals without having some top class players in the squad surely???

I'd agree and I'm a saints fan.. Dwayne B is well worth a look as well.. not sure about keeper though.. too prone to basic errors and at that level will be punished. young coady and burns look like the best prospects. obviously the foreign player in the middle ( not being from ireland) would be ineligible.. think aaron is hard done by but at mo strikers are 2 Killesters fellas, joe watson so its fairly competitive...

Having played against Clonmel a few times the last few years at U17 and Youth level(for Nenagh AFC) Dwayne Burns looks a very promising player and seems to be improving all the time .

I've only seen that keeper once now but he very nearly got Clonmel knocked out against us , his mix-up with a defender allowed our equaliser and a second mix-up right at the end of extra time almost allowed myself to get a winner(why couldn't it have gone on target)
