Take a listen to The Queen Is Dead. It is the finest album ever recorded.

It's 19 years since The Smiths split yet they still sound fresh.

A lot of people on here seem to go back to the Roses' debut, surely I'm not the only one of a growing number who think Second Coming was their finest hour?

JAMES. The most uncelebrated rock bands ever. They were on the music scene for over two decades. Their album "Laid" is a great introduction to them. I saw James in the Manchester Arena in 2000 and it was the best gig I was ever at.

Yep, every track a classic (Well except "Never had no one ever")

Does anyone else think comparing The Smiths and The Stone Roses is futile, it's debates like this one that the phrase "chalk and cheese" was invented for.

Both absolutely brilliant bands. Both completely different.

Oasis, decent as they were, probably don't belong in the same breath

    Anyway top 5 Smiths songs:

    1. Still Ill
    2. The Queen is Dead
    3. There is a Light
    4. Stop me if you think you've heard this one before
    5. A Rush and a Push and the land that we stand on is ours

And yes like someone said above by the time I'm finished typing this post my mind will probably have changed

    Top 5 Stone Roses

    1. Adored
    2. This is the one
    3. I am the ressurection
    4. Elephant Stone
    5. Ten Story Love Song

    I'd have to go with
    1. I am the ressurection
    2. Fools Gold
    3. Adored
    4. She Bangs the drum
    5. Elephant Stone

The only track off the second album I'd put in an SR's top ten is Begging You. I do like the second album but the first is just superior in every way.

    Smiths:
    1. There is a light that never goes out
    2. Cemetry Gates
    3. Frankly Mr. Shankly
    4. How soon is now
    5. Panic

Yep,brilliant band. A fixture at most parties of our group. " This bed is on fire with passionate love, the neighbours complain about the noises above, but she only comes when she's on top oh yeah!" Love it!

That would be Nigel Blackwell who supports Tranmere Rovers.

By the way I knew the Irish connections of The Smiths and Oasis, which of the Roses had roots here for the record?

Another band with Manc and Irish connections is of course the Cult. At Billy Duffy has some Irish connection. I remember seeing him and Ian Astbury being interviewed by ITV during USA 94 over in the states and they were going to an Ireland game wearing the jerseys and all that. Duffy is a Man City fan. Think Astbury supports Everton though but he's not scouse, probably from somewhere in the vast connurbation between Manc and Merseyside.
