JAMES. The most uncelebrated rock bands ever. They were on the music scene for over two decades. Their album "Laid" is a great introduction to them. I saw James in the Manchester Arena in 2000 and it was the best gig I was ever at.Originally Posted by jebus

Does anyone else think comparing The Smiths and The Stone Roses is futile, it's debates like this one that the phrase "chalk and cheese" was invented for.
Both absolutely brilliant bands. Both completely different.
Oasis, decent as they were, probably don't belong in the same breath

By the way I knew the Irish connections of The Smiths and Oasis, which of the Roses had roots here for the record?
Another band with Manc and Irish connections is of course the Cult. At Billy Duffy has some Irish connection. I remember seeing him and Ian Astbury being interviewed by ITV during USA 94 over in the states and they were going to an Ireland game wearing the jerseys and all that. Duffy is a Man City fan. Think Astbury supports Everton though but he's not scouse, probably from somewhere in the vast connurbation between Manc and Merseyside.
