Scratch that, here's Liam Brady scoring the opening goal for Inter in a 2-1 win against Roma in May 1986
    Goal at 0:45
All goals, yellow and red cards tweeted in real time on mastodon, BlueSky and facebook

Did he look quite fast in the build up to that goal? I can't figure him out. Sometimes I think he's too slow and not big enough to justify being a 9. Then he looks no slouch there and has three separate possessions (including a finish) in a fast break goal.

Two goals in the group stages, both winners thus earning €420,000 in prize money, with tonight's goal guaranteeing a spot in the last 16, adding €500,000 to the prize pot, plus an extra game in front of a packed house - the €4m AZ shelled out for him is looking like money well spent.

Not really, I just know how to look stuff up. There's only been a handful of Irish players in Serie A, which meant checking their history wasn't time consuming. Wikipedia has lists of foreign players for most of the bigger competitions, here's the Irish players in Serie A
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...lic_of_Ireland

I know that Robbie Keane, Ebosele and Abankwah haven't scored in the competition, so no need to check their histories. Transfermarkt has added a load of historical data, and you can limit a player's history to their goals
Here's their record of Brady's goals, the penalty against Roma is a little over half way down
    https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/liam...spieler/165411
Took a chance that it was on YouTube, and got lucky.

A friend of mine replied on Twitter that Paddy Sloan scored for AC Milan against Roma in the 1948/49 season, again discovered using transfermarkt
    https://www.transfermarkt.com/paddy-...spieler/583738
Couldn't find any video footage of that game, and it almost certainly doesn't exist, but one quick Google of the game came up with this history of Roma site, with photos from the game in question, including one of Sloan's finish!

The 1984 European Cup Final was one that jumped to mind too, but while three Irish players were involved, none of them scored, even in the shoot-out. (Wiki says Roma needed to bribe the referee to get past Dundee United in the semi-finals - football was so much more competitive and interesting in the olden days!)

Roma have never played an LoI side in Europe - though Ards did score one against them in the 60s.

Gary Kelly and Ian Harte played for Dave O'Leary's Leeds side against Roma in March 2000, with Alan Maybury on the bench - https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleagu...roma-vs-leeds/ - but none of them scored
Kelly and Harte appeared in the return leg in Leeds, joined by Stephen McPhail - https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleagu...leeds-vs-roma/

McPhail had played against Roma for Leeds before, in Rome in October 1998 - https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleagu...roma-vs-leeds/ - and in the return leg in Leeds two weeks later, alongside Harte - https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleagu...leeds-vs-roma/

Very cool! The image is unfortunately in a bad way from being reproduced in a paper, so I tried a few online AI image enhancers, with this the best result:

Its the other image. I ran that image through Google Lens, and the text reads
Sloan is one on one with Risorti. He completely missed the ball; a Giallorossi defender will definitely be responsible for averting the threat

Against the Giallorossi, Mi'an, who with the inclusion of Nordahl have regained confidence in their own abilities, clearly imposed themselves from the first half. Here are some of the highlights of the contest: Annovazzi's goal scored from a free kick; Sloan beats Risorti for the second time; the Roma keeper's dive on a move by Gudmundsson; a shot by Nordahl that will be blocked; Valle prepares to overturn while Delli Innocenti keeps Nordahl at bay.

Follows Idah with a European goal of his own. Came on after an hour; scored his 13th of the season as AZ nearly came back from 4-1 down against Ferencvaros to draw in injury time; ended 4-3

They were through anyway and I think now meet either Sociedad or Galatasaray next

Robbie Keane's first win as Ferencvaros manager too actually. They're also safely through to the next stage

He's not the strongest or the quickest, but that's a goal that reminds you of what a talented footballer he is. Intelligent run and a great finish. It probably won't happen, because it's us, but there's still a possibility that we could have some genuine international quality forward options by Euro 2028 in him, Ferg, Cannon and Idah.

Just confidently tucked home a pen to put AZ one up.

I think that puts him up as second top scorer in the Eredivisie. He's on an excellent run to be fair to him.

I read a story about how the Ferencvaros Ultras actually dressed up as stewards and attacked the AZ fans, it wasnt stewards employed by the club
