Compensation not agreed, yet there is a rumour about how much will be agreed?

    Strange..............

If Rafter was worth 10k, I'd say Cork will easily hold out for double. Surely a tribunal would agree.

    Rafter attracting a fee? Hardly

Mark Griffin, sorry. I always get those two confused. I think "sources" tell us the fee was 10k in the end? I thought it was ruled by a tribunal but I might be wrong. As far as I know, 20k was the fee Dundalk were looking for, so it's hardly unreasonable for Cork to demand the same, especially with English clubs having a look.

Just a few things re the Griffin 'transfer'

The fee was never agreed & Derry have still not paid us anything.

Also this will have to be settled in time for 2014 PD licence being awarded to Derry.

I don't imagine it will be huge money, but it will still need to be paid.

The Griffin picture remains unclear - Derry media certainly claimed that Dundalk were looking for stg£20k, although I believe this was not accurate.

Generally clubs will seek what they believe they are entitled to by way of the rules on compensation payments - not necessarily what they think the player is worth. What ends up being negotiated between clubs or decided by the DRC tribunal is another thing.

Griffin was a player with a lot of potential 24 months ago - there will not be a big scramble for him now. Horgan is a very different proposition.

Sorry, I thought I'd read in Dundalk media a figure was agreed. That's madness then - the FAI does have a tribunal system in place, as unreliable and ad hoc as they are.

Well it would be foolish of any club to be arguing fees based on what a player is worth and Dundalk are right to seek a figure based on what they can reasonably hope to achieve. Sorry, maybe I read Derry sources and assumed it was agreed upon by all.

Don't worry, Oriel, you'll know plenty about him before the end of this season.

Ha, you're probably right, but this time we'll set Towell on him!
#DundalkFC - First Irish club to win an away game in Europe (1963), only Irish club to win a game / points in Europa League Group Stage (2016).

In Horgan's case the 20k figure is more than fair no matter what way you look at it. He came from Sligo as an U19 who wasn't breaking into the first team and he is leaving as one of the most sought after players in the league. If he was still under contract and we were selling him then it wouldn't be near 20k that's for sure. In short, 20k is an absolute bargain.
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

He never played for our U19s. He was in between the bench and the stands for most of his time here (as you say).

And 20k is way over the top for a slightly above average player who will give you a decent performance every five or six games.

He was a starter in the first division with Salthill Devon, then a sub with Sligo and then a starter with Cork.

Derry will be paying nothing for Griffin as the proper procedure wasn't followed by Dundalk. I believe his contract offer wasn't lodged with the FAI in the right timeframe. Do you not think it strange that our club has made absolutely no mention of this supposed debt??

At the time he left us to go to Cork there was talk that we had agreed a 50% sell on fee with Cork. Not sure if that only related to him going to England though (or if it's even true).

This can't be true. Dundalk nearly went under a little over a year ago. Surely no team in the LOI is in a position to pay a 20k transfer fee.

You would be amazed at what is possible if a town gets behind it's team. 110% increase in attendances in 2013 accompanied by significant sponsorship from local businesses.

How do you think Sligo have pulled together a €1 million plus annual budget?

    Support.

Support my a*se. It's always good to throw out a percentage when the numbers aren't that impressive - your 110% increase isn't a jump from 3,000 to over 6,000 fans, its 900 to approximately 1900. Not enough to justify transfer fees. This isn't a 'dig at the rivals' by the way. I have seen this first-hand - I'm sure we were one of the last clubs to pay a transfer fee of that magnitude for a player and we had lovely support at the time. We still went belly-up. No club in this country (except maybe Rovers) have the financial resources to pay out transfer fees like that. Surely there are fans questioning this?

Fans are questioning whether spending €20k is wisest use of the money, but it is still a relatively small part of our annual budget.

Our annual budget in 2013 to run the club was around €600k. It is probably going to be closer to €700k in 2014. The compensation payment to Cork will amount, at it's most, to less than 3% of our budget.

If Horgan goes on to have a great season, everyone will say the €20k was well spent, if he does a "Marc Griffin", they will say the opposite.

I don't understand your absolute aversion to compensation payments. Why single those out over player wages, number of coaches, or the number of players in a squad?
