Good news on the Brandywell redevelopment front.

The home of the Candystripes is set for a multi-million redevelopment following the announcement that funding has been secured.

Airtricity Premier Division side Derry City are set to reap the benefits of an allocation of public funding which will go towards the redevelopment of the Brandywell.

The Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure (DCAL) in Northern Ireland has confirmed that a sum of £2 million (€2.3m) will be allocated towards the development of a 'Foyle Valley/Brandywell Masterplan' which seeks to improve sporting facilities in the Foyle Valley area, including Brandywell Showgrounds, adjacent to the Brandywell Stadium.

In addition, funding from Derry City Council, to the amount of £2.8 million (€3.3m) will be invested directly into the development of Brandywell Stadium.

Welcoming the news, Sinn Fein MLA for Foyle Raymond McCartney and said that it would have a "massive impact" on the area.

"I welcome this announcement which means that the redevelopment of the entire Foyle Valley/Brandywell Masterplan has now been unlocked, in conjunction with Council funding of £2.8million," he said in a statement.

"It will have a massive impact in terms of promoting social inclusion, tackling health and social inequalities, building sporting excellence and maximising participation."

The Brandywell Stadium is a municipal sports ground owned by Derry City Council, and Derry City represents one of its main tenants.

You'd imagine £2.8m should build another stand similar to the existing one with dressing rooms. Up to 6,000 all seater?

I'll not be holding my breath until the builders are in the ground.

Any plans for the stadium have yet to be released, although it's know the Glentoran (old) Stand is set to be torn down in January. I'd imagine replacing that in some fashion would be desirable, but then again the whole stadium needs comprehensive work - the £2.8m could go on anything and everything.

How about spending it on players and making up the money later when you get into the European group stages?

Doubt it. Fixing/Replacing the wall on the Lone Moor Road end is due to cost £1 million.

To be fair, this is nothing to do with the club. This is a case of someone taking 2 and 2 and making 16 out of it.

As mentioned in the article, the Brandywell is part of the "Foyle Gateway" and this money referring to improvements in this area, not to the stadium. The money will go to pitches on the other side of the road to the way most fans enter the ground, as well as improvements to the Showgrounds(the pitches you see from the car park). Nothing to do with the stadium itself.

Looks like the pitch in the Markets Field will be in place sooner than thought.

A million? It doesn't even look in bad shape, why would they waste money on that.

Markets Field coming along nicely, there's a good lot of grass laid and planning permission is lodged, now we'll just have to wait and see who has to object!!! Hopefully we could be there for start of next season with temp seating and portacabin changing rooms.

Hoe long does the notice need to be up before granting of permission to start?

One of the local councillors stated a year ago that they could push through the planning permission once they were satisfied with the plans in place and that it meets some issues they were going to raise like a community centre for the local people of Garryowen.

A lot depends on how good the pre-planning was, how much further information is needed (if any) any if there is any objections. Min. length to get planning - 3 months. Max length - a lot longer. What happens on the Decision Date will tell the tale.

Fingers crossed so no hiccups or objections. Could be looking at a month or two in Thomond park and a move then maybe.
