Shocking performance and some very strange subs today.
They played tonight, lost 3-0, I'm hoping there's abit of fatigue and Euro hangover when they travel down Sunday.
I'm not too hopeful being honest,
1-3 Derry
Shocking performance and some very strange subs today.
some decent spells in the first half, however it was the same predictable passages of play which away teams suss out quickly and defend in general quite comfortably against.we dont create enough and while gambles miss was probably the difference between a point and nothing at all we would not have deserved it as derry had they taken their chances should have won by 3 or 4.essentially though this game was about decision making, devine got his correct, taylor got his horribly wrong.can anybody tell me what is going on with gaffeny?if he is not injured then its obvious taylor has a problem with him, this was a game made for him.
Listened on 95 FM. Sounded pretty dire, though that might have been influenced by their commentary team, who spent most of the second half criticising Taylor to an insane degree.

Thought we were very good in the first half. Had them on the ropes in the second until we conceded and then we were dire. We are only a few signings off being a very decent team
Taylor doesn't seem to fancy Gaffney at all and to be honest had been shown nothing otherwise.
Doesn't look like Hughes or Fitzgerald have been signed anyway. Three more trialists playing tomorrow though.

I must have been at a different game, thought we played very well. Some of the football tonight was excellent to watch. Gamble should have scored and we should have had another but for lads not shooting when the chance was there. We also had 3 shouts for a penalty. Derry scored from a hoof which was against the run of play, up to that it had been Limerick who looked on top and most likely to go in front.
Have to agree i think we were the better team and were never going to get anything with that ref. Derry did nothing and created very little tho we tried to help them by doing the usual and giving away a goal passing around in front of our own goal, some strange subs tho, Derry were lucky!!
All I want to know is, how in God's name did Gamble miss that???
In all fairness, we were decent in spells. We'll play a lot worse and win.
But the same problems that have been there all season are still not being addressed. Big pitches don't suit the team in my opinion, far too much ground to cover in that formation and we don't have the legs for it. Centre half is a problem, we lack pace and the players to effectively start attacks from the back.
Midfield has been poor for most of the season when we have had 3 quality players in there.
And Taylor definitely doesn't rate Gaffney when he's been left on the bench 2 games in a row when we're trying to get back into it.
Cork is a huge game for us next week. They win, they go ahead of us, and we're looking over our shoulders nervously. Kilduff and Kavanagh could have a field day with the sloppiness we show at the back.
We won't go down, but we don't have the squad to get dragged into a dog fight either. Hopefully there'll be news on signings in next few days.
Watching Limerick this season is a lot like watching Scooby Doo. Exact same storyline every week. Only the opposition is different.
Again last night, we had the lions share of possession without any penetration. Once again, the tempo of our build up play was too slow and deliberate. Once again there was little or no vertical movement in advance of the ball.
Derry were more or less playing a 4-4-2, happy to cede control of the middle of the park. Despite this, they played quite a high line to deny Limerick space between the lines, safe in the knowledge that we carry precisely zero threat in behind. They were far more direct in their approach, looking to exploit the space in behind our full backs on the counter.
Limerick's only chance was from a set piece (which Gamble should have converted from point blank range). Derry on the other hand, had 3 or 4. Barry Ryan's exploits kept the score down, including a saved penalty in the first half.
That penalty developed as a result of Axel Bossekota's non-existent positional sense. Often during the game, his opposite number, right full Simon Madden, was allowed to run forward unchecked. This time, he made a clever out to in run into the box. O'Leary was forced into the foul. Late in the second half, at 0-1, Madden was allowed to go free again. His cross from the byline should have been converted at the far post.
Once again, Limerick's insistence on playing a narrow, Mancini-like, 4-2-3-1, leaves them looking utterly toothless from open play. Pretty sure the definition of madness is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. If I was Taylor I'd be thinking "ruh roh" right about now.
was at the game but listening to the commentary for the hurlling scores and to be fair they wer fairly complimentry to limerick in the first half couldnt hear the 2nd half as it went off air but to be honest in my own head i was thinking this is getting too predictable every week conceding sloppy goals and loads of passes but no penetration something has to change or i cant see myself keeping up my interest as it aint cheap..Substitutions wer baffling to say the least and gaffney surely he is a better option than young sheedy??
A lot of people seem to have unrealistic expectations of the team.
Derry are the top scorers in the league, and have the fourth best defensive record. They have a good squad, with (like us) a mixture of youth and experience, and (unlike us) the core of that squad has been together for a couple of seasons in the Premier Division. They more than likely have a bigger budget than us. They are just four points behind Pats, with a back-match to play against them.
Limerick are sixth in the goal-scoring list, and have the sixth best defensive record. Surprise-surprise, we're sixth in the league table too!
There were so many positives to be taken from our performance.
I thought our general play was very good: we moved the ball quicker then we usually do - players showing for the ball, making our decisions quicker; we got the ball into the box more than we often do (even if we couldn't always get a shot away, or get a shot on target - what about all those penalty shouts?); we put in some excellent tackles at the back and in midfield.
From a coaching/development perspective, its great for a mid-table team to play a title-contending team and to go away disappointed that we didn't win it.
Based on our performance, we could have won that match, and were certainly unlucky to lose it.
Fight the good fight!
(Now with my very own account on foot.ie - How cool am I? - 15/02/07)
Taylor deserves his critics to an extent, a few points, he has stuck with an inept Danny Galbraith, he has made Rory Gaffney and Paddy Purcell almost extinct, he has failed to find a partner for our best player Curran, he hasn't dealt with the concession of schoolboy error goals at the back. But overall I wouldn't be over critical of the manager, he clearly wants to keep playing football and luck certainly hasn't been kind with several results. He backs his players at all times and to his credit always tries to shine the club in a positive light, overall in my opinion he has been a million times better than the last manager
good post senior blue !!
