Could you imagine if Sadlier had turned into the player he looked like becoming for a while though? Keane and Sadlier up front for us for the last decade, that would have been amazing! On the other hand, Kevin Doyle was looking pretty good until about 18 months ago as well. We never know where Sadlier's career would have gone.

Think you're giving Sadlier more credit than his ability warranted. I know he was only 24 when he retired but 30 odd goals in over 100 games in the lower leagues is no great shakes. Especially compared to what Keane had achieved by that age.

Is that a little bit harsh ? I am no apologist for him, I do not like him or rate his punditry input and I think there are maybe a lot of sour grapes in him. But, wasn't he delivering a fine season for Millwall in the Championship with an international call up and the beginnings of talk of a decent transfer at the time of the injury?

I saw Sadlier play (as did many posters on here), he was a decent player, nothing special and his "promise" has been hyped to the hilt by......himself! He has used his Indo columns to create a myth of Richie the Superman, he was no superstar.

It's amazing that RTE (Dunphy) damned AMcG as terrible in the match, yet I thought he did well and the IT rated him highly, as did anyone I spoke to from home today. Then again, he plays for some team nobody knows about, so he mustn't be any good!

I thought Aiden was very, very good. He made some cracking runs and did manage to put decent balls into the box. I think the frustration with Aiden, from a spectators perspective, is that he has built the anticipation in his play with his fleet-footed dribbling and the ability to know when to cross the ball, that when the delivery is far from perfect the frustration is enhanced.

Funny I have just download the match and watched the first few minutes and we see both side of Aiden,
early on he has beat his man (who slipped) but then his shot is so poor, almost 90 degrees off target.
Then a couple of minutes later he delivers in a great pass to Robbie for the opening goal!

I think one of the problems with having quick feet is that they are not often accurate feet when hitting the ball
    especially with pace.

I think he woudl get better results overall if he concentrated on accuracy almost 100% ie passing rather than crossing
or shooting. I often see Wayne Rooney pass the ball into the back of the net when he could have put his foot through it.
I think there is a lesson to be learned there.

I think there is a similar thing going on in golf, it is often better to concentrate on hitting the ball well rather than hitting it hard
odd thing is it often seems to go further that way, and of course it goes in the right direction!

Aiden did play well, but he also put in a few poor crosses/shots, it does seem to be the case though that the slowest
of players, ie someone like Ian Harte are the best crossers/passers of the ball.

Mind you I just looked at some stats and Aiden came out better than Harte on crossers

Bit puzzling some of that maybe.

Some rather witty comments have been left:-

calton: "Someone give him a plate!"

........UltimateFifaKnowledge: "Mate, he really knows how to finish his dinner "

"TheColl96" is not a big fan of him!!

Also:- Speedy McGeady / Greedy McGeady and 85 Aggression. Typical Irishman

THe 'Hulk' they keep refering to is Givanildo Vieira de Souza the brazilian winger if like me you didn't know.

Maybe I should get that game myself!!!

This was a par performance, nothing more.

Ironically those encountered watching on TV were far more scathing than those who dragged our asses down to the new Lansdowne.

The quality was no way near high enough to beat either Sweden or Austria IMO, partly because of Trapp's personnel choices/questionable tactics and partly because the players themselves don't seem currently to have sufficient ability or confidence to show they are good enough to do so.

Good Lord. Glad I watched this game out of Ireland as the absolute rubbish spouting from the RTE studio would have ruined the weekend. It's like this Dunphy & Sadlier have an agenda set for a long time and no matter what happened on the pitch they play to that. So Wilson played badly that's down to being crippled with fear by the manager, ignores the lack of fear he showed away to the Faroes where logically the manager would inject him with a double dose of fear before kick off. He just played poorly and possibly carrying a knock? They are also guilty of taking current performances of say Coleman, McCarthy, Long etc and back dating them 2 or 3 years to prove their point...it's an old tactic.

And the official crowd, only 19k? More than that surely?

Very surprised at that; was thinking about 30k looking at the TV. Thought it was fuller than against Georgia, and looked a respectable crowd tbh.

Acc. to Sat's Irish Times (hard copy), looks like you were pretty much right.
They give the crowd as 30, 805.

A certain august governing body involved in a VAT 'scam ?
    Surely not...

Where'd you get 19000 from? Saw it on wiki, but it's a round number, so hardly an official crowd if the Irish Times are being given 30805. Extratime going with 30805 too; they've posted on here to say their official crowd figures are supplied at the game; anything else will have "est" beside it.

    Bizarre.

Can't see it being a scam as you suggest anyway! 30585 seems both official and roughly correct.

Aye, strange discrepancy of nearly 12k.
Normally when crowds are understated, it's to avoid some form of tax...

Wouldn't there be an official record of the number of tickets sold though? Not that that necessarily means that all ticket-holders turned up, but that wouldn't make a difference for taxing purposes surely...

    Danny,
That's far far too much like common sense...

Who on earth could Dunphy have been mistaking Hoolahan for when he claimed (at around 12:20) that Wes played for Ireland "a long time ago" at left-back under Mick McCarthy "in America in some Mickey Mouse tournament"? Bizarre.

Keith O'Neill? God knows. He'd clearly been on the beer all day.
