The Iron have signed Everton centre-back Shane Duffy on loan for an initial month. More to follow on Scunthorpe-United.co.uk.

    Iron Swoop for Everton Defender

The Iron have moved to sign Everton defender Shane Duffy on loan for an initial month.

The 19-year-old centre-back is presently on duty alongside fellow United centre-back Niall Canavan for the Republic Of Ireland's U21 side who he has represented twice.

The youngster began his career in Ireland turning out for youth side Foyle Harps before joining Everton in November 2008.

Duffy made his Toffees debut a year later as a substitute, coming on for Everton against AEK Athens in a Europa League tie in Greece.

In Everton's next European fixture against BATE Borisov, Duffy completed the whole 90 minutes at Goodison Park in a 1-0 defeat.

He went on to join Burnley on a month's loan the end of last season but only made one appearance for the Clarets.

Internationally, Duffy has represented both Northern Ireland and Republic of Ireland at youth levels up to U21 but has recently elected to choose the Republic of Ireland as his senior side to represent.

A bit disappointed by that. I thought he'd be at a Championship club.

This lad seems to be going backwards, unfortunately. Considering he made his debut almost 2 years ago, the injury seems to have set him back a lot.

It's easy to forget how young Shane Duffy actually is. He is 19 years old and League 1 for a month is a welcome step up from reserve football.

He made his debut at 17, in the Europa League when injuries ravaged Everton. He wasn't just injured, but literally almost died on the pitch at 18, and is back playing at 19, with the prospect of playing competitive first team football, having already experienced a taste of the Championship last season. He played for the U19s this year and is currently part of a strong U21 squad assembled by Noel King.

He has had his knockback and is slowly making his way forwards, if you ask me. This is a massive season for him.

Won man of the match in 10 man Scunthorpe's 1-1 draw with Sheffield Utd at the weekend.

    From the article :

"It was Duffy who really caught the eye, adding organisation and composure to the centre of the Iron's defence .

"Shane is what I think is a proper centre-half," said Knill of the Everton teenager.

"He wants to head it, he wants to defend and then he'll have the ball as well.

"We're delighted that we've got him and thankful to Everton that they've let us have him because there were plenty of other people who wanted him."

Loan deal looks to be extended and Scunthorpe boss Alan Knill is impressed: http://www.thisisscunthorpe.co.uk/Sc...ail/story.html

Scunthorpe United are today in negotiations to try to extend the loan stay of the player manager Alan Knill calls 'a proper centre-half'.
Republic of Ireland Under-21 international Shane Duffy has impressed during his month at Glanford Park, so much so the Iron are hoping to hold on to him for a while longer.
Yesterday's 2-1 victory over Yeovil Town was the 19-year-old's fourth appearance for United and Knill is confident Premier League side Everton will be happy for him to remain where he is.
"I've spoken to Shane and he is benefiting from playing in someone's first team," said the Iron boss.
"It's better he plays in a competitive team that is playing quite well rather than the reserves.
"That's what they sent him to us for, to learn, and that's what he's doing. And I have to say, I think he's getting better.
"The thing I like most about him is when the ball comes into the box, he really wants to head it – before anybody else. He's a proper centre-half."
It's interesting to note that Duffy went to Scunthorpe as a replacement for Niall Canavan, who had been starting ahead of him for the U21s. Canavan was injured last week before he was supposed to go on loan to a League 2 side, so maybe Duffy will start in the next international games.

Nice piece about Duffy's progress at Scunthorpe, going from intermittent reserve encounters to regular competitive games.

I'm not surprised. Look at how reluctant Moyes has been to try Coleman and Rodwell in defence, and they're a lot more established than Duffy. The best thing Duffy can do is continue getting games, hopefully at a higher level after Christmas, and show Moyes he's capable of making the step up.

I agree. Best stay at Scunthorpe where he is getting plenty of first team games under his belt. Hard to believe that he is still only 19

19 and with a pretty extensive sleeve tattoo on his left arm.

What is it with footballers and tattoos?

I believe the loan has an emergency clause whereby Everton can call him back if necessary, but he's doing well, playing regularly so it wouldn't make sense to recall him permanently now. They specifically asked for Sc unthorpe not to play him in the FA cup so that he wouldn't be cup tied - presumably because they might need him, or because Moyes might want to give him a few games in the cup.

Exactly. Although on the Coleman and Rodwell reference, of the two I can only see Coleman dropping back into defence. Rodwell hasn't played centre half since his time with Everton U18s. I'd say he might even be behind both Duffy and Mustafi for the CB options at this stage. Could be wrong though, he is only coming 21.
